Sony Sells 18.5 Million PS4s Globally, Briefly Lists Final Fantasy XV in 2015

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Street Fighter V also briefly listed for 2015 release

Sony Computer Entertainment announced on Tuesday that it has sold more than 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide as of January 4. The company added that it sold 4.1 million PS4 consoles over the holiday season. Sony said that PS4 sales have demonstrated "the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation® hardware history."

The company added that as of January 2, the PlayStation Network has more than 10.9 million PS Plus subscribers. Additionally, PS4 software sales digitally and in retail stores surpassed 81.8 million globally as of January 4, with 17.8 million sales coming from the holiday season.

A cache of the original Japanese press release mentions titles that it plans to sell "this year," including: Street Fighter V, Final Fantasy XV, Persona V, Bloodborne, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Mighty No. 9. Sony does not specify, however, if the listing of Final Fantasy XV is the full game or the upcoming demo that will be included with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD in March. Sony had not previously mentioned a release window for CAPCOM's Street Fighter V game.

Sony has since updated its press release to change the phrase "this year" to "in the future."

The English press release does not mention Final Fantasy XV, Persona V, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, or Mighty No. 9, but instead mentions other Western games such as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Batman: Arkham Knight. The English press release also does not specify that its list of upcoming games will release this year. Both press releases mention that the title line-up and number of titles may differ by region.

The official German PlayStation Blog had reported on December 29 that Final Fantasy XV would appear in 2015, but that blog also did not specify if it was the full game or the demo.

The PlayStation 4 is available in 123 countries worldwide as of December 2.

Sony sold one million PS4 consoles in the first 24 hours since its launch in the United States and Canada in November 2013. Famitsu reported in March that Sony sold 322,083 PS4 units during the console's launch weekend in Japan last February. The console reached six million units sold globally in March, and 10 million units globally in August.

Update: Sony had not previously mentioned a release window for CAPCOM's Street Fighter V game.
