Fight of Gods Fighting Game Causes Temporary Ban of Steam in Malaysia

Fighting game depicts religious, mythological figures in combat

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) called on Malaysian Internet service providers to prohibit access to Valve's Steam online service last Friday due to the release of Digital Crafter and PQube's Fight of Gods fighting game. The service providers began allowing access again on Sunday after the game was delisted from Steam in Malaysia. Some service providers have continued to prohibit access to the service.

The fighting game features a cast of characters drawn from religious and mythological figures, such as Zeus, Odin, Jesus, Moses, Gautama Buddha, and Amaterasu.

While access to Steam was prohibited, users could not access the service's store to purchase games or other services, but were still able to play games that they had already purchased and downloaded.

At the time of the original ban, MCMC Muiltimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak stated that the ban was "[to ensure] solidarity, harmony, and wellbeing of the multi-racial and multi-religious people in the country are the main objectives of the government. The government will not compromise with any action that can jeopardize these objectives."

PQube issued a statement at the time of the original ban that noted that Malaysian officials had not contacted the company regarding the ban.

PQube released the game on Steam on September 3.
