RLJE Films Acquires I Kill Giants Film, Sets 2018 Release

posted on by Karen Ressler
Film of International Manga Award winner centers on socially awkward girl who imagines giants

RLJE Films acquired the U.S. rights to the live-action film based on Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's International Manga Award-winning graphic novel I Kill Giants. The film will debut theatrically in 2018.

The company acquired the rights from the worldwide rights holder XYZ Films. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

The film stars Madison Wolfe (Joy, Trumbo) as the main character Barbara and Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, Avatar) as her school psychologist. Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later, Need for Speed) will also star in the film as Barbara's sister.

Oscar award-winning short film director Anders Walter ("Helium") is directing the feature film, and Kelly is writing the screenplay. Treehouse Pictures' Justin Nappi, 1492 Pictures/Ocean Blue Entertainment's Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Home Alone, Goonies, Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland), Kelly's Man of Action Entertainment, and XYZ Films (Tokyo Tribes) are producing the film. International distributors include Sun in Latin America; Falcon in the Middle East; Camimovie Srl in Italy; Abbolita in Southeast Asia, South Africa, Greece, Portugal and Turkey!; and Entertainment in Motion for international airlines.

The story centers on a socially awkward girl named Barbara who believes that giants exist. One day, Barbara gets into a fight with the bully Tyler and accidentally hits her good friend Sophia. While Barbara worries about losing her friend, she prepares herself to ward of the coming giant attack.

The graphic novel was first published by Image Comics in the United States in 2008. It won the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' International Manga Award in 2012 and Japanese publisher Shogakukan printed the comic in Japanese after previewing it in the January 2013 issue of Shogakukan's Monthly Ikki magazine.
