Shanghai New World mall hosts theme park by Japan's Nelke Planning

The Shanghai New World shopping mall announced on Tuesday that it will open a new indoor theme park named "Naruto World" based on Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto manga. Nelke Planning, a Japanese stage production company that specializes in anime, manga, and game properties, is producing the theme park. The park will have an area of roughly 7,000 square meters (about 1.7 acres) on the 11th floor of the mall.

J-World Tokyo, the first theme park dedicated to the characters from Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, will close on Sunday after six years. The "Nijigen no Mori" (2D Forest) theme park in the Prefectural Awajishima Park in Hyōgo Prefecture announced last November that it is launching a new attraction based on the Naruto and Boruto franchises this April.

Kishimoto launched the original Naruto manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, and ended the series in November 2014. The manga has 140 million copies printed in Japan, and 95 million copies printed outside of Japan.

The series has spawned multiple anime, anime film, OVA, and game adaptations. The Naruto Shippūden anime series ended in March 2017. The manga is inspiring a live-action Hollywood film at Lionsgate.

Ukyō Kodachi and Mikie Ikemoto launched the Boruto sequel manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in May 2016. The manga inspired a television anime series titled Boruto: Naruto Next Generations that premiered in April 2017, and is ongoing.
