Hikaru Nakamura's Black Night Parade Manga Gets Live-Action Film Starring Ryō Yoshizawa, Kanna Hashimoto

Yoshizawa plays man hired to give terrible gifts to naughty kids at Christmas

Hikaru Nakamura's Black Night Parade comedy manga is inspiring a live-action film that will open throughout Japan on December 23. Ryō Yoshizawa (live-action Gintama, Bleach, Kamen Rider Fourze) is starring in the film, and Yūichi Fukuda (live-action Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, Gintama, HK/Hentai Kamen) is directing (and co-writing the screenplay with Tetsuo Kamata).

The story follows Miharu Hino, a young man who could not get into college or a steady gig, so he ends up spending every day at his part-time convenience store job. However, this man who is good for nothing somehow lands a job via "Black Santa Claus" at a company that delivers terrible presents to naughty children. ("Black companies" is a Japanese slang for exploitative workplaces.)

Kanna Hashimoto (live-action Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Gintama, Kingdom) co-stars as Shino Hojō, Miharu's hacking genius colleague at Santa Claus House, a company that delivers presents to children worldwide.

Taishi Nakagawa (Josee, The Tiger and the Fish, live-action Your Lie in April, Sonic's Japanese voice in 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog) plays Kaiser Tanaka, Miharu's gaudy co-worker and rival when they worked at the convenience store.

Keisuke Watanabe (live-action Fullmetal Alchemist sequels) plays Teppei Kohira, a taciturn, expressionless, but kind colleague who looks after Miharu for some reason.

Yoshizawa noted that this is his second time working with Fukuda on an adaptation (after Gintama), and he was full of delight and anticipation to be collaborating again. He added that he spent "crappy hot nights" running around streets in a bulky Santa suit "soaked in sweat, tears, and blood," and joked that of all the exploitative sweatshops, Santa's is probably the worst.

Nakamura drew an illustration to celebrate the completion of the film:

Nakamura launched the manga in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump in November 2016. Shueisha published the manga's first compiled book volume in December 2016, and it published the seventh volume last December. The manga has also run in other venues, including Ultra Jump, Digital Margaret, Shonen Jump+, Cinra.net, Line Manga, pixiv Comic, Niconico Seiga, and more.

Nakamura is also currently drawing the Saint Young Men manga series, which started in 2006. The story follows the everyday lives of Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha, who are roommates living in an apartment in Tokyo. A two-volume original anime DVD project produced by A-1 Pictures shipped in 2012 and 2013, and the manga also inspired an animated film in 2013. The manga has since inspired a live-action adaptation.

Nakamura's previous work includes Arakawa Under the Bridge, which ran from December 2004 to July 2015. The manga series has spanned 14 volumes and inspired two television anime series, a live-action television series, and a live-action film. Vertical licensed the manga, and is releasing it in omnibus volumes.

Nakamura also illustrated NisiOisin's Juni Taisen - Zodiac War novel. Viz Media released the novel in October 2017, and it inspired aa television anime. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan, and Funimation streamed a dub. The book received a sequel in December 2017.
