Japanese Idol Group AKB48 to Perform at MIPCOM

AKB48 format inventor Yasushi Akimoto to speak

Paris, 28th July 2009 – Japanese girls group and idol phenomenon AKB48 will be performing at the 25th MIPCOM Opening Cocktail Party at Majestic Hotel on Monday 5 October, in the presence of most prominent variety show producer in Japan and inventor of the format, Yasushi Akimoto. MIPCOM, the world's entertainment content market, will take place in Cannes from 5 to 9 October.

Presented at MIPCOM by leading Japanese distributor, CREi Inc., AKB48 was created in December 2005 by Yasushi Akimoto. With the concept “meeting real idols daily,” AKB48 is composed of three teams (A team, K team and B team) of 16 girls that perform live everyday at the Akihabara AKB Theatre in Tokyo. AKB48 have solidified their presence as an idol group that fans can casually go and meet. They have also their own TV program “AKBINGO!”

AKB48 is also a new business model that Yasushi Akimoto will introduce during a conference held on Tuesday 6 October in the presence of the group. Originally a lyricist (he sold over 40 million CDs as a J-Pop songwriter), he became a broadcast writer in high school and ever since, has produced many popular shows like the “Hole in the Wall” format which has been successful all over the world, “All Night Fuji,” “Yuyake Nyan Nyan,” “Onyanko Club,” “The Best Ten,” “Oshare-ism,” “Utaban,” “Tonnels no Minasan no Okagedeshita.”

There will also be a spotlight on Japanese fiction during the Fresh TV session by the WIT (information and research agency on international TV markets and programmes) on Tuesday 6 October. Japan, country of honor at MIPTV 2008, will be present in force as usual with all major exhibitors such as NHK, Fuji TV, TV Asahi, TBS, CREi, Dentsu, Geneon, TV Tokyo, Kodansha, Mico, Nippon Television Network Corporation, Toei Animation and a Japanese Pavilion.
