A Skull Symbolizing Rebirth — Art Created to Endure for 100 Years
World-Class Japanese craftsmanship shines in the All-Metal statue “Skull Knight” returns in a limited edition of five pieces
TOKYO, JAPAN – March 7, 2026 - ART OF WAR, the Japan-based fine art brand devoted to exploring Japanese history, culture, and aesthetics through sculpture, will release a new edition of its first-ever metal statue, “Skull Knight,” in a strictly limited edition of five pieces beginning March 13, 2026.
The first edition was released in 2024 as a limited production. This new edition returns as a special version adorned with garnet gemstones.
The work is entirely handcrafted by Japanese artisans possessing some of the highest levels of craftsmanship in the world. It is fully Made in Japan and made entirely from metal.
The piece was conceived by ART OF WAR, the fine art brand that for nearly 30 years since 1997 has researched Japanese art, history, and culture under the themes of “Japanese beauty” and “battle,” producing numerous works of art.
■ Japanese Craftsmanship at the Highest Level
Japan has long possessed many extraordinary traditional techniques passed down through generations. However, due to challenges such as aging craftspeople and a shortage of successors, the number of artisans has been declining and many crafts are facing the risk of fading away. Metal casting is one such craft.
Even today, artisans remain whose technical skill and passion rank among the finest in the world. With the desire to share and preserve this exceptional Japanese craftsmanship, ART OF WAR completed this work as a piece of art intended to endure for the next 100 years.
■ The Concept: A Skull Symbolizing Rebirth
The skull symbolizes rebirth. It represents death, while simultaneously revealing the presence of life that emerges from it.
The decline of Japan-made craftsmanship — and its revival and rebirth — forms a central concept behind the work. Creating a perfect skull sculpture entirely in metal represented both an innovation within Japan's casting industry and a bold challenge aimed at revitalization.
It would be difficult to find anywhere in the world a metal skull statue of this level of quality. The almost obsessive level of craftsmanship behind this piece reflects the determination of Japanese artisans to revive the spirit of Japan-made artistry while confronting difficult challenges.
■ Materials and Design
The head portion is made from Silver 925, while the base, representing the body, is crafted from pewter, a material used since ancient times. Using two different metals enhances the unique texture and character of each material.
Compared to silver, pewter is less susceptible to oxidation and deterioration, offering a distinctive metallic expression. The surface is intentionally left partially unpolished to preserve the raw texture and character of the metal.
For this new edition, garnet gemstones have been set into the eyes of the skull, bringing new life to the work.
The skull evokes death, but by setting gemstones in the eyes, the sculpture embodies life as well — expressing rebirth through both the symbolism of life and death.
The head can be detached from the base, allowing the piece to be enjoyed not only as an art object but also as a wearable skull ring.
■ A Rare Opportunity
Although this work uses Silver 925 and pewter (tin), the recent global surge in mineral resource prices and demand suggests that producing works made entirely from pure metals may become increasingly difficult in the future.
In fact, gold and silver are already becoming harder to obtain, and some workshops have discontinued product development using silver altogether.
Because demand for metals in general continues to rise, this work may not be produced again in the future. As a result, this sale may represent the final opportunity to acquire the fully metal “Skull Knight.” It is therefore an exceptionally rare opportunity.
■ An Artwork for the Next Hundred Years
The creators hope that this work will endure for the next hundred years. Yet a century from now, an all-metal artwork produced using the techniques Japan proudly upholds today may itself become exceedingly rare.
Just as in ancient Egypt and in the jewelry of royalty and nobility, where gold and precious stones were once used with a level of luxury that would be almost unimaginable today, such works have become precious historical artifacts.
The metal statue “Skull Knight,” which holds value both as an artwork and as a material object, will be available for purchase on the ART OF WAR web shop until March 26.
