Satoru's love life has hit rock bottom. As "The World's Worst Lover," he's been dumped time and again due to his terrible skills in bed. Just when he thinks all hope is lost, the God of Seduction, affectionately nicknamed Ecchan, suddenly appears to turn his fortunes around! Ecchan reveals that the only way to make things right is to find Satoru's perfect partner--a match so ideal that sparks are guaranteed to fly. Enter Shinya Hoshina, a wildly popular actor and Satoru's supposed soulmate. Satoru manages to get close to Shinya, leading to a night that redefines everything he thought he knew about pleasure. But as Shinya's kindness and sincerity begin to melt Satoru's heart, what started as divine intervention turns into something much deeper.

What could be worse than being so bad at sex that women refuse to date you? Having Ecchan, the God of Seduction in the Bedroom, show up to personally help you improve your skills. That's what happens to Satoru, and it's combined with the sting of Ecchan informing him that he's made the list of World's Worst Lovers. But he shouldn't fear, because the god will personally help him by finding him the person he's most compatible with and then tutoring him to make sure that Satoru is the world's best bottom – because it turns out that his perfect match is another man, actor Shinya. None of this is what Satoru wants to hear, but he's stuck in this manga, so he has no choice but to comply.

God of Seduction in the Bedroom created by someone else, could have been a mean story, preying on Satoru's insecurities and forcing him into a relationship he didn't want. But here it's handled with a lot of humor and a clear implication that part of the reason Satoru's bad at sex is that he's never really loved or been attracted to his past partners. Ecchan's hunt for Satoru's perfect match is equally about love as it is about sexual compatibility, and he consistently says that sex is one of the most human connections possible, which is why Satoru needs to find the right person. While this does risk making some implications about asexual people, it doesn't seem to intend to, so even my oversensitive self can allow them, because this is a story about Satoru specifically, and he's very much allosexual.

Overanalysis aside, this is delightfully unhinged, a bit like a racy take on Phantom of the Idol. Only Satoru can see and hear Ecchan (although those with spiritual ability can perceive the presence of something), and he's not always on board with his new god's ideas. That means that Shinya knows that Satoru's being “haunted” by something (in fact, this is key in how they first end up in bed together), but as the two grow closer, the initial motivation of “exorcising” the so-called spirit falls by the wayside. Ecchan may have used sex to bring them together, but it's love that keeps them there.

Full of bizarre outbursts and a combination of explicit sex scenes and heart-to-heart conversations, God of Seduction in the Bedroom is a lot of fun. It has its issues, primarily in a character who forces her BDSM preferences on others, which doesn't do the subculture any favors, but it's generally a good time. Also included is a short story starring two older men, which is a nice bonus, so on the whole, I'd say that picking this up is worth your time.

What's most fascinating about The God of Seduction in the Bedroom is how, despite the silly premise and the copious amounts of graphic sex, it perfectly follows the romantic comedy movie formula. It starts with a premise to push the lead character into the arms of a handsome man – in this case, the marketing executive Satoru is approached by Ecchan, the god of seduction, and told that the reason he can't find someone willing to marry him is that he's awful at sex. Ecchan tells Satoru that he's sexually compatible with the A-list actor Shinya Hoshina, despite Satoru having always identified as straight.

From there, you have the comic misunderstandings and characters telling each other half-truths: Shinya can see that Satoru is “possessed,” and Satoru says the ghost is a superfan who won't leave him unless Shinya sleeps with him. Despite the foundation of lies, the two grow closer and end up sincerely bonding. The truth comes out, and it looks like their relationship will fall apart. However, when a rival shows up in the form of Shinya's female costar, who wants to push Satoru into a Domme/sub situation, the two realize just how much they care for each other. They make up and finally form a stable relationship, this time without the lies.

I've never been a big fan of romantic comedy in the short form, but seeing it utilized here in such a strange little one-shot tickled me. The standardized structure is hung with odd details, like a chibi god shouting sex tips while the main character, a previously heterosexual man, gets absolutely railed by a famous actor whom he's barely spoken to before. Instead of fake dating or what have you, the meat of the story is filled out with graphic gay sex. Much like the Hollywood actors who often star in such films, the art is generic but attractive. For people who prefer their sex scenes fully consensual, it's nice to see how much Satoru enjoys getting railed.

The God of Seduction in the Bedroom is a silly little title that's worth at least one read. It's not substantial or sexy enough for me to recommend keeping a permanent spot on your bookshelf for it, but if it crosses your path, it's a fun way to pass some time.
