Reincarnating after a life of tragedy, Shana's ready to live her best life. As the only child of a doting Duke, how hard could it be? That is, until the Crown Prince claims she's his... and a handsome werewolf says only she can heal his kind! Well, time for Shana to open her (illegal) Werebeast Hospital!

The pacing of I Opened an Illegal Werebeast Hospital is pleasantly quick. We learn Shana's situation, the premise of the story, her sad, yet entirely relevant, background, and several of the key complications right up front in the first two chapters. It's actually a pleasure to speed run through some of the more common plot drivers and skip right to the actual plot. But before we get there, I want to shout out the writer who left an adult woman's consciousness in a baby's body and let her feel uncomfortable about breastfeeding and bodily functions.
Funnier is that, for some reason, the Prince seems to grasp that baby Shana understands him. He's creepy and possessive, but smart.
The humor continues through early chapters, from a team of A-ranked adventurer maids to squeaky shoes that go “peep”, so Shana doesn't run away again. The pacing continues to be brisk, and we already know that Shana's a powerful healer, so we're motivated to see how she gets there.
I also very much appreciated that we didn't get a long, detailed explanation of magic in this world, although I can't rule out it showing up after the chapters I read. I mean no offense to any creator, but magic in these magic-based worlds is all pretty much the same. Unless you're coming up with a really different spin on something, readers don't need more than a cursory explanation of elemental magic, I promise you.
It does appear that werebeasts in this world are an underclass, and I do hope later chapters address that. It's a complete copout to set up systems of slavery, poverty, economic underserved, and just ignore the origins or consequences.
And of course, there is the draw of werebeasts. People love animal ears and tails on characters, and with a premise like this, you're bound to get a lot of ear and tail close-ups. With humor like this and pretty people with fuzzy ears, you might want to give this a try.
