I was wondering if I was the only one upset by this....
Watching the Academy Awards last night, I waited patiently for Satoshi Kon's name to appear in the yearly tribute they play for the great film creators we have lost in the previous year. No Satoshi Kon...in fact a LOT of people were not in the memoir.... http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/oscars-in-memoriam-didn't-mention/ I know Kon wasn't from America, but he was extremely influential in the American film market.... .....I mean... ....Inception won several awards last night, and the creator even admitted to being influenced by Kon's work! animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-01-10/inception-nolan-black-swan-aronofsky-get-dga-nods Is anyone else upset by this? ---------------------------- EDIT!!!- I'm now being told that the second link I posted is indeed a fake. Since posting this, I have also learned that only members of the Academy can be put in the Memorian. That being said, several of you have stated that (despite these above facts), many other big names in Hollywood have mentioned Kon's great work. Also (an opinion of my own in this argument) I do not believe that the memoir segment of the Academy Awards should be limited to members only. ...it's disrespectful to the many other people who have worked for years on films, and yet are not recognized for their life's achievements. I do find that strange, seeing as Satoshi Kon had been nominated for an Oscar, you would think he would warrant a spot. Though I wonder if the reason they didn't add him is the segment ran out of time? I'll admit I didn't catch the Oscar's this year but I checked out the winning highlights.
Though perhaps the important part is that Satoshi Kon and his work, and the appreciation there of still lives in his fans. |

He was never nominated. Oddly, the Washington Post obituary says Tokyo Godfathers was, but as far as I can research, this was not the case. |

Jozo: That Nolan story was a mistake which fooled everyone, including me, and I only rectified the issue recently. [See the second post from the bottom.]
errin: They mixed him up with Miyazaki. That's why they claim he was nominated. All his post-Perfect Blue films were eligible, but none of the distributors were willing to campaign for them enough for him to get a nom. And yeah, it would've been nice if at least Natalie mentioned him in her acceptance speech, given she owes part of her Oscar to him and all.... |

Nope, the Academy decided Shark Tale was deserving of the honor instead. I'm not surprised he was left off the list, simply because he wasn't well-known in America, he was foreign, and yeah, this year's Oscars were terrible. Not the awards themselves, mind you, but the ceremony. Utterly embarrassingly unfunny hosts, most of the recipient and presenters could've done a better job, a total example of why the ratings for the show keep going down. |

IIRC, the Memorium portion is only for Academy Members, not anyone connected to film period. I highly doubt Satoshi Kon would have been one, though I could be wrong.

Ah, that would explain some of the American actors who were left off the list. And no, he was one of the co-founders of a union in Japan, but he had no affiliation with the Academy. |

I am with you there. A bland movie with talking fish wins a award yet Satoshi Kon isn't awarded anything? That is just plain sad on so many levels. I am pretty sure one of the reasons for that is because some people still have vastly outdated concept that all anime is for kids and is nothing worth mentioning at all. They have enough time for severely off key kids trying to sing a song I doubt they understood the lyrics to, yet they don't have enough time to mention a man with such influence on movies over the years. Also the hosts, for the most part, they weren't that funny, if at all. Really, trying to be Chirs Rock and other comedians only makes you look like you copying them and not really thinking of the material yourself. They may as well be trying to be like Hideaki Sorachi (author of Gintama) or like Akira Toriyama. |

What's with trashing the hosts? James Franco was mostly a dud, but I found Anne Hathaway to be sweet, appealing, and natural, and she was certainly trying (unlike Franco). I particularly liked her "On My Own" bit concerning Hugh Jackman. (Of course, it doesn't hurt that it's based on one of my favorite songs from my favorite play. . .)
I would have been very surprised if Satoshi Kon had been mentioned. Even without the Academy membership requirement, he just wasn't that prominent a figure in the movie scene outside of Japan. Being somewhat influential to one director's award-nominated movie isn't enough. Miyazaki kicking the bucket? He might actually get mentioned when that happens, unless there is, indeed, a requirement for the person depicted to be an Academy member. (But I'm pretty sure that they have previously shown very prominent foreign directors, so I wonder about that.) He did win an Oscar, has had several films released in U.S. theaters, and is widely-recognized as a major influence in the American animation industry. |

I dont really pay the academy awards much mind, reasons such as the shark tale dreck that was mentioned above spring to mind.

Key: Actually, it was more than one name, as I've noted before numerous times. Elijah Wood talked about Paprika in an AICN interview; Guillermo Del Toro called Kon a "great director" at the Nolan Q&A; Terry Gilliam mentioned his films in a top 50 animated movie list; and one of the How To Train Your Dragon directors praised Kon in an L.A. Times obituary.
Jozo: As I mentioned in the DGA thread, that story was fake. I talked to Nolan, and he said he'd never seen it, but he heard of it, and was interested, particularly when I brought up Kon mentioning TDK before he died. Last edited by GATSU on Wed Mar 02, 2011 3:50 am; edited 1 time in total |

Yes, but let's be honest: even with those mentions, Satoshi Kon was hardly a widely-known and recognized name in the biz. |

Key: He was mentioned in TIME, WAPO, and EW. Plus, Ebert reviewed at least one of his movies. And don't forget that Paranoia Agent got air-time on AS. So while he wasn't huge, he was at least as big as Darren right after Requiem.
