The ol' cliche where two swordsmen slash past each other, momentarily pause, and then one collapses.
I'd been told that this convention is loosely based on Kurosawa, and I'd swear that years ago I saw a scene in one of his films that seemed prototypical of this, but... I can't remember which film it was. Perhaps my memories have confused it with something else?
Any Kurosawa fans here who can help clarify this for me?

I thought of that too, but the end of Yojimbo is a bit different from what Danno is talking about. The other guy didn't even get a chance to slash at Sanjuro (I think that was his name). And there was no running through a field, under moonlight, etc, etc... I suppose it could have been inspiration for the cliche, though.

Not on the topic of swordsmen, but has anyone ever seen his film, "The Most Beautiful?" I really liked it (though for some good WII Japanese stuff, try for Rikugan.)

I'm a huge fan of Akira Kurosawa, Japan's greatest director. Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Ran... he set the standard for samurai films, and many of them inspired many great American westerns as well (Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven, Yojimbo/A Fistful of Dollars). I certainly recommend checking out his work, a DVD collection of "Akira Kurosawa: Four Samurai Classics" is sold for $65 at DVD Planet and contains the classic Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. I also recommend the newer movie Ran (it's in color), based on Shakespeare's King Lear. You can buy it now, but a Masterworks Edition will be released soon, and I think it will be that much better due to the movie restoration and HD transfer.
