just a quick question, is it necessary to watch Last Exile to watch Last Exile -Fam, The Silver Wing-, by which i mean, is it:

a] a direct sequel, like SnS III is
b] set in the same universe, where knowledge from Last Exile is useful but not necessary, like Fate/Zero
c] simply from the same franchise, where no prior knowledge is necessary to watch it
d] something else...

thanks 4 any help

You could just read the thread, y'know. Surely that'd be the best place to find your answers without starting a new thread yourself?

Just sayin'.

Anyway, since I'm being an obligating fool today, yes it's a direct sequel, yes it's in the same universe with some of the same characters. Knowledge is useful but not essential, the story thus far stands well on its own. So a combination of a) and b).

Seriously though, you'd have found that out on page one of the damned thread.

personally I would say c). The show is advertised as a) and to people who have seen the original it looks like b). But since the show has a great many differences in setting, mood and feel you are better off going in blind. People like me who are fans of the original run into a lot of obstacles trying to link the two shows and it impacts on our enjoyment.

I have personally given up the struggle to reconcile my feelings for the two shows and have dropped the sequel. I would probably have been a lot more forgiving had I not seen, and loved, the original.

So I think it best that you watch the show blind, free from the baggage of your impressions of the original. Given how long ago the original was I think that was the intention of the production team.

Yes, but the main thread is probably filled with spoilers also, so that would wreck his experience. To answer the OP's question I would actually say to enjoy it properly you would need to have seen the original series. I might not have said that a couple of weeks ago, but the latest episodes keep bringing up characters from the original series (going as far as to say, that I think most of the characters from the original are going to make an appearance at some point). And based on some of the recent events it looks like the new series might actually tie closely to the original series. So while it certainly isn't required I would certainly recommend having seen the original series. (which BTW is IMO a great series so you should watch it anyway.)

Seriously, the OP in the Last Exile thread covers both the fact that it's a sequel and that there are characters from the same universe appearing in it. There are also spoiler tags, not that there's much to spoil after one episode.

The whole point of creating series discussion threads is to keep discussion (and subsequent questions) in those threads. If Getsuga311 had checked the thread, he'd have found what he was looking for and it wouldn't have 'spoiled' anything for him. Since he's asking these questions I assume he's new to the franchise, any mention of recurring characters would take nothing away from his experience.
