Can anyone recommend some wierd Anime?
I've seen Ghost in the Shell etc, not really my thing, looking for something more alternative + less boyish. More impressed by Taiyo Matsumoto's work like Black+White, No.5 etc. and wierd European artists like Moebius. thanks |

ah, weird anime, my specialty
I've tried to order this list by level of weirdness (very approximate) Nekojiru-sou (this goes beyond surrealism into pure acid trip) Angel's Egg (everything's weird in this; Mamoru Oshii rules) Utena the movie (can anyone say 'surrealism'?) Robot Carnival (a bunch of short movies) Perfect Blue (psycho-thriller, a real mind-f*ck) Neo Tokyo (3 short movies) Memories (3 short movies; Canon Fodder is esp. 'alternative') Boogiepop Phantom (13 eps, story told in a non-linear way) Serial Experiments Lains (a classic) Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (very zen pace) Haibane Renmei (13 eps, not 'weird', but very unique premise and pacing) |

Every show on your list that I've seen (Boogiepop, Lain, Perfect Blue) I've really liked, with the exception of Utena. My dislike for Utena stems from the fact that it's all sureal and no substance, I very much like metaphorical & surreal stories, provided that there is a base story that the other stuff is built up on top. I should definitely take a look at the other movies you mention. |

check out 'Soultaker' if your looking for some weird animation concepts. I had to sit away from the screen so I could see what all was going on.The series is kind of confusing but the end is sort of uninspiring. But the presentation is excellent and is never boring.

I want to defend Utena, but
1. I'm too scatterbrained right now to mount a compelling defense and 2. I don't know what I'm defending it against. No substance? I see plenty of substance, but like I say, I'm in no shape to make a case. I'm sure Zac or someone can rise to the occasion. |

This area is also my specialty...
You can find some cool shorts (not all are translated) from anime creators (mainly Koji Morimoto, who also directed the first part of memories) on a french website at www.catsuka.com Thes are all really cool, particularly the Morimoto shorts, but not all of them are translated. Some are music video's all of them are really cool. The good thing is that many of them have no dialogue. Also in there is a pilot for a possible "Black and White" TV series that never materalized. Other 'alternative anime' worth watching: Manie Manie (aka Neo-Tokyo, aka Labrynith Tales, aka Meikyu Monogatari) Three relatively experimental shorts by some top names in Japan. Its kind of the 1980s equivalent to memories. Since you like Moebius this contains a short by Otomo who is heavily influenced by Moebius' style. Rintaro's short is particulaly abstract. Really cool work Kawajiri's short called the "Running Man" appeared on Liquid Television in the early 90's. Look me up on AIM under Neilworms2 for more info on getting this one. Spring and Chaos (Kenji's Spring) Arty biographical film by Shoji Kawamori about one of Japans most famous poets Kenji Miyazawa. A fair amount of hallucinatory animation, very offbeat and abstract. Any other film by Mamoru Oshii: I know you didn't like Ghost in the Shell, but you should probably check out some of this guys other works. Particularly angel's egg (as mentioned earlier) and the Patlabor movies (more so on Patlabor 2 if your looking for something off-beat in style). Other recommendations: (these are less wierd but still quite different from the normal anime) Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro Poro) A 20 something woman goes on a sabatical to get away from working in the city. Whlie she's their she thinks of her life in 5th grade, the two lives converge and she makes discoveries about who she is and where she is going. Pretty typical for a drama in live action, but never done in animation before this. The thing that makes this film so excellent is its execution, wonderful visuals and superb direction. From the director of Grave of the Fireflies, Isao Takahata. Gauche the Cellist (Goshu The Cellist) Based off of a short story by Kenji Miyazawa (see spring and chaos). It appears to be child-like on the surface, but is actually a deep look at art and the creation of it. An excellent film, also directed by Isao Takahata. Interesting stuff coming up: Kino No Tabi From the director fo Serial Experiments Lain and the Writer of Perfect Blue. Only the pilot episode has been released so far. I appreciate these lists. I'm very much into the bizarre and surreal (my favorite author is Kafka after all) and visual mediums add a great deal to these types of tales (I'm a fan of Terry Gilliam's Brazil).
I've had Angel's Egg on my desk for a while, but it's hard to find the time and mood for it right now, but I think I'll enjoy it. I really liked Patlabor 1 and 2, certainly they rank among my favorites. |

OMG! They've even got the Daicon films! THE DAICON FILMS! Wow, thanks Neil, this one's a treasure trove.
lol, that's funny because I just finished rewatching that one. As usual, Ghibli makes very *very* good movies. Actually, while rewatching it I was surprised at how creative some of scenes are. I didn't remember this movie had such quasi-surreal scenes in it. Anyway, this one is highly recommended. |

No problem, I think this is one of the coolest animation sites on the net. I bet its even better for you and other french speakers because you can actually understand what the guy is talking about on his site, sadly I don't speak a word of french. :(
The cool thing is that this appears to be a trademark of Takahata. Every film of his that I've seen (every film but Panda Go Panda), even the Disneyesque Horus: the Prince of the Sun, has one really well done surreal scene in it. |
