Speaking of Bakemonogatari, there were three writeups done for the series. Which of them are going to be used?

I haven't more than skimmed over them enough to confirm that they're legit postings, so when I sit down to process everything (likely Friday and Saturday), I'll choose the one I think is best-written.

I didn't know there were three write ups for that (aside from Dtm42 who I suggested could maybe write a better one), apologies if I wrote mine up after someone had already posted one.

Just to let you know I went back and touched up some of my nominations. Removing a spelling mistake here, fixing a grammar mistake there, and indulging in some rewording to improve sentence flow. Nothing too dramatic, but nevertheless I'd like the new versions to be used.

No, there was mine, yours and Dorcas_Aurelia's (which was largely your initial nomination but touched up at your request).

Oh yeah, and I like errinundra's suggestion. The fourteen-round plan looks quite doable, since after the first round we'd have watched most of the episodes anyway.

Ahh right, I've been through looking but cant for the life of me find Dorcas Aruelia's write up. Must be because I've just woken up and not had my coffee yet. My brain is on strike this morning.

I also ended up editing the Ruyoini Kenshin: Trust and betrayal post about 11 times after I origionally posted it to correct the same things DTM42 has mentioned. I have terrible habits when it comes to seeing my own mistakes and making them so apologies for that.

There is zero chance that I'll get to any of the Guide entries before Friday evening, so for the next 55 hours from this post you can do whatever editing you want to your nomination posts without having to inform me about it.

In fact, I would encourage everyone who made nominations of one or more of the 64 qualifiers to go back and check their spelling, wording, formatting, etc., if they haven't already done so. I generally have to do significant grammar corrections and/or rewording on about half the entries in these tournaments, so that would certainly cut down on my work load.

Ahh I see. Brilliant.
It's always on strike in some way or another Smile
Dorcas Aurelia has somehow made my thoughts comprehensible and presentable ( a rare occurence) so big thumbs up there from me.
Thanks for taking the time to sort it out.

Hmmm, so Futakoi Alternative didn't make it?

I guess I shouldn't be so surprised. 2005 must be ancient times for something that never got licensed here in the states. Actually, I don't think there was a single title in the 64 that wasn't licensed and/or streamed. To be expected I suppose.
I think that Bakemonogatari meets the "no official English access" condition.

Nor has Kaiba (which I'm quite pleasantly surprised made the cut, and with votes to spare). Mawaru Penguindrum hasn't either yet, has it? Granted, none of them are nearly as old as Futakoi, but Kaiba is almost 4 years old now.

Also, might as well post the introductory post for the mini-game.

Rules for ANN's Best First Episode Tournament Mini-game
Submissions:
To enter the mini-game, fill out and send me a completed bracket. Brackets can be emailed to me at Sean_A_Rooney [at] yahoo [dot] com. Entries may be submitted up until the tournament starts.

Instructions
Once Key posts the bracket, fill out who you think will win each match up, all the way to the final victor.
For my convenience, please include your screen name in the file name.

Scoring:
First round - each correct guess is worth 2 point.
Second round - each correct guess is worth 3 points.
Third round - each correct guess is worth 4 points.
Fifth round - each correct guess is worth 6 points.
Semifinal round - each correct guess is worth 8 points.
Final round - a correct guess is worth 10 points.

Prizes:
First place will receive $150 worth of anime, manga, and/or related products of their choice.
Second place will receive $100 worth of anime, manga, and/or related products of their choice.
Third place will receive $50 worth of anime, manga, and/or related products of their choice.
In the event of a tie, the prizes will be split evenly (e.g. if the results produce a first place winner and a tie for second, first place receives $150, the two in second receive $75 each).

Eligibility:
Anyone may enter. In order to receive the full prize, you must be able to provide a mailing address to which the prize can be delivered. Limit one entry per person.

With 22 points, Haibane Renmei tied with L during the Most Clever/Intelligent Character Tournament and Spike Spiegel from the Coolest Character tournament for the all-time highest nomination score - and both of the other two won their respective tournaments. Moribito, with 18, missed tying the highest 2nd place score ever by just one vote. (Anyone want to guess who that was and in which tourney?)

spoiler[Light Yagami, also in the Most Clever/Intelligent Character Tournament].

Oh man I wish I had gotten around to seeing the nomination for Moon Phase. I would have totally voted for it. Although that looks like it wouldn't have given it enough votes to make the list. Maybe next time we should have a "no more nominations, only voting," cushion period.

Furthermore I think there should be some sort of vote weighing to prevent ones being nominated late in the game from being inherently disadvantaged by fewer votes.

I'm ecstatic that Kaiba made it in, but it does indeed have an official English release in Australia via Siren Visual (the DVD set even got a review here on ANN). Bake and Penguindrum are perhaps the most 'mainstream' or 'popular' series that have not had a legal stream and/or license (though Bake's sister series Nisemonogatari is indeed streaming on Crunchyroll). But thank you for pointing them out.

I disagree because we had several instances in these nominations where titles exploded up to high single digit (and in a couple of cases even double-digit) votes within just a few hours of being nominated. Given that we had around a hundred different titles on the list at the end, I feel it's safe to assume that any overwhelmingly deserving title which doesn't get nominated until the last day could easily power its way into qualifying.

I don't like that explanation, Key.

Some, especially older "classic" series, need time to be seen by enough people familiar with them. By my count Slayers finished with only 5 votes, and it took 4 1/2 days to get there. Lain took 2 1/2 days too get it's 5th out of a total of 6 points. Are they less worthy because they took more than a day to qualify?

So, you announced the cut-off midnight Sunday to be in 24 hours, The final nomination, Ranma, (and yes, it was mine) was only up for consideration for less than 12 hours.

And in the case of this tourney the extra warning gives people extra time to check out something they might not have otherwise.
Monday evening I watched about 6 previously unseen first episodes to consider them. I was very close to voting for a couple of them, including Requiem from the Darkness - which would have given it 5, but thought you hadn't reached the 64 thresh-hold yet and decided to wait to see what you would say about that.

I honestly think, in the future, it is very fair to declare a day to end nominations and the day to cut off voting to be two or three days later.

I still stand by my reasoning. Not my fault that people chose to ignore my suggestions to concentrate on existing series which were close to making the cut and continue to offer new ones even knowing that they'd only have 12 hours left.

I do appreciate you bringing this up, though. It had totally slipped my mind that I needed to be working on setting up the brackets today. Razz

That wasn't a suggestion, it was "too bad, you're out of luck."
Still, I took it into consideration. I wouldn't have nominated Ranma if I didn't think it had a chance (however slim) of getting votes in 12 hours. I figured if anything would have a chance it would have been Ranma,

See, even if you want to the set the end of nominations and the end of voting at the same time I don't see why you have to do it without fair warning and the first anyone heard from you about the cut-off date was 24 hours before-hand. Handicapping your own nomination of a obscure series and every one after it. The only two from the last day to pass got in by the narrowest margin available.

And while, as I said, I did take the chance to watch a few episodes after getting home, one I didn't bother with was Living for the Day after Tomorrow, I was open to watching it, it's a show I think I'd probably enjoy, but I only had a couple hours to watch stuff (it's not like the final day was a weekend either)- I was focusing on shows with 4 points- there wasn't enough time to consider a show like that.
