Are other people here annoyed that Anime is such a taboo?
It is at least were I live. All people I know, who I tell that I watch anime, are always responding with something like; "What the hell" or "damn your a geek freak"! I truly belive that Anime has an appeal to pretty much everyone. I belive that the reason that people choose to watch lame reality shows over anime, is just ignorance. What if the japanese companies like Bandai and anime sponsors tried to get Anime out to people in different way. If they introduced a Itunes like service. Let's call it AniCinema(just an example). You go into a similiar interface like Itunes, and are able to quickly view, preview, buy and get tons of information from the animes. Of course it should be of great quality. When you would purchase an anime you should be allowed to get HD quality resolution and both with DUB and sub tracks. I dont know... I guess I could care little for what other people see and enjoy, but I just feel sorry for people who don't even have the chance. Were I live most people don't know what an anime is. Or if they do, they will simply just think its some perverted hentai or pokemon. Akira and certain Ghibi films are probably the only ones who have reached far enouge to make an impact in northeren europe were I live. And It makes me sad. Animation is wonderful. That only a single nation like Japan is making so much for the rest of the world. I love drawing myself, and if there was an education or somekind of job that would allow me to draw anime for a living I would defintely do it. But at this rate it even seems that cartoons for kids, like Disney is losing their edge. |

I wouldnt go so far as to say that people dont like anime because theyre ignorant. I mean there are a large number of different anime titles available and with many of them being so very different, i think its fair to say that there are an equal number of reasons to dislike anime as there are to actually like it. It seems though, like the people in you're area are truly allowing their perceptions of anime to be guided by mistruths and stereotypical generalizations. As for your idea, i think its good in that it does provide another medium for people to access anime which would, in turn, increase the public exposure to it. However, I'm not entirely sure if exposure alone though can solve the problem. As mentioned before, people do have misguided notions of anime and so the exposure would only give people more chances to say no to anime. In my mind, people must first be convinced of the idea that anime does have things that will appeal to everyone in order for them to be willing to try such a service. If, perhaps, major distributors were able to strike an advertising deal with some powerful and popular company, then maybe people would begin to understand what anime has to offer. |

I think ignorance is a major factor, you ask if they watch anime, or have watched it, they reply..
"i stopped watching cartoons when i was 8" there is this pretense that many of these great shows can be compared to Penny Crayon or Biker Mice from Mars where character development, long story arcs etc dont exist. pokemon was seen as a kids cartoon, but very little actually gets shown on terrestrial tv, and had i not had the internet i wouldnt have known what im missing out on. Up until 5 months ago i knew nothign about anime, and even now im still watching and getting to grips.. To actually watch anime is like being part of a club, to know where to look, to know what you may like, to post on forums like these, its like being a goth i would expect, at some point you have to take the 1st step to go down that path, be it music, or anime. |

I myself loathe reality TV...but I wouldn't say people who do watch it over anime are ignorant. However, people who say "Anime SUCKS!!!!!" And then I ask them "Ok, what anime have you seen that sucked?" And they reply "Actually i've never watched an anime show before."
I can't say I have any friends who have ever watched an anime show, and now watch reality tv... BUT, i'm sure that there are plenty out there who do. But, there are way too many people who hate anime before they even watch a single episode. Also, I think a lot of people think beforehand "anime sucks" before watching a show. If you think something is awful before you do it, chances are it will be...because you want it to. A lot of people just don't give it the proper chance. And it's true, people usually do think of Pokemon or DBZ when you mention anime. This is because the shows we have on america TV typically aren't the best there are out there. PLUS the good stuff is always on very late at night, or on 'Adult Swim'. What parent is going to let their child watching something on ADULT swim...even if it's suitable for older children. I think it's poorly advertised in america, and even though word is getting out more and more about anime, it's about people giving it a chance. People also tend to hang on to old habits. Those who watch american tv will keep watching american tv. It's hard to get someone into a new trend...or to even get them to try it. I know, I try to get a lot of my friends to watch anime, but they all refuse saying "No way, it SUCKS!" When they admit to never even seeing a single anime show... I don't understand why this stereotype of 'geekiness' has been placed into their minds... I guess in order to get anime out there we just need advertising in a positive light. Right now, what channels on american tv is anime advertised on? CN? WB? (I don't know, I haven't had cable the past year so I haven't been watching tv...). It needs to be advertised more on other channels. Plus, I think a lot of the anime that is put on American TV is mostly shounen based. (Maybe i'm wrong...but that's all I can think of right now). I think it's because a network isn't going to put something on TV, that the current anime watching populace isn't going to watch. Anyway, this post was long enough so I'll stop there. |

But ain't also the problem that these shows get censured constantly? I heard there was an anime series called Escaflowne, which got horrible eddited for a younger audience? I think that stuff is too bad. If Fox started sending something like Samurai Champloo, would that be able to make it more popular? a stylish, bloddy and "hip" anime? I dont know.. I truly am tired of being considered a freak or pervert or moron because I enjoy anime:( |

I still don't understand why some of you people actually bother hanging out with people that call you geeks/morons/perverts or whatever. Can't you just let it go and let people think whatever they want to think. If they are ignorant, then let them be ignorant. Why do you really feel so obliged to make people believe things they don't want to believe? No to mention, are you absolutely sure that everything you say is truth and fact?

I can agree that many people generalize anime as a nerd/geek/uncoolish thing, and yes soemtimes it is based on ignorance.
I dont explect them to know or understand anime but when they make a decision based on not knowing anything about it, it does say much about their intelegence... Tho it is their opinion and I will respect it. I do try to educate them, teach them why anime is good but many will just put it down with out exploration. Where I live only about 30 people in my school truly enjoy and understand most of anime. but I dont expcet them to it would be very useful to be able to create a wider audience range....... To many people generalize it as a freak-kid thing and I do see this, daily. Why is anime such a bad thing to theese people? Evangellion, Cowboy Bebop, Slayers, Kenshin, .Hack//Sign, DragonballZ, Witch Hunter Robin, The list is endless.... Because MOST anime IS for an OLDER audience Idont understand why people put it as a kid thing.... Maby they saw one bad anime and generalized it, aswell there are SEVERAL styles of drawing in anime... Many that are realistic, for those people who choose to not like it because of being exajurated with cat ears or wings or crazy expressions. Well this is my situateion where I live and this is what I see... I hope my opinion helps. -MABY if people where to see anime as less of a kid-thing they may choose to explore it... maby advertizeing it this way could make anime more popular...? Just a thought. I would like to hear 10 good reasons why they hate/dont want to get into anime from EVERY person who hates anime, I bet you might have 3 in 10 people that can support their opinions well enough to info be liable. |

Well, no one has ever called me moron or a pervert for it. I probably have one friend who says i'm a geek...but I have enough who say "anime sucks" And later tell me they've never seen an episode "it just sucks". It doesn't ever really bother me that much, because i'm sure that there have been plenty of times i've said something like that to my friends for something they like as well...and I don't want them to see me as a hypocrite. Either way, I don't really mind hanging out with them because it's impact on myself as a person is insignificant. However, the issue isn't 'how my friends make fun of me for watching anime!' it's more of...at least I think is, 'Why the some people have negative views towards anime, and what can we do to get the word of anime out there to those who belittle anime itself, without ever watching it.' So I don't take offense as a person, it's more offense to see someone degrade anime without ever seeing it. I personally think that if more people knew about anime and gave it a try, they could possibly end up enjoying it. And it's a possibly that many people dislike it, because they've never tried it. Think about how many people dislike a food that they've never tried...
I don't understand what you mean by this. What is this in reference to? |

Heh, consider yourself lucky then. Coming from the UK, the response from most adults (in my experience, anyway) is along the lines of "isn't that Japanese porn?", the blame for which lies solely on the shoulders of our channel 4, who introduced anime in the form of Urotsukidoji. Thanks, guys. This view is slowly being eroded as new series are released here, which is nice, and if the trend continues I guess anime will be no more popular/unpopular than any other hobby. So, ideas to make anime more popular? Just give things time, and it'll happen naturally. ...I hope... |

I know this is far easier said than done, but if anime were marketed well to teenage girls, it might bring the stigma down. Note that many other traditional nerd hobbies like D&D-type RPGs, model-building, Star Trek and so on are things that girls generally find geeky/stupid/unattractive. In turn, other guys make fun of guys who have these hobbies, saying, "I can't believe you're into that stuff, man, you ain't never gonna get laid at this rate! You'd better watch some NASCAR!" (because that makes you a "real" man

If there can be a cable channel devoted to FOOD, I'm sure a cable channel can be devoted to anime.
If cable isn't available in some area, then anime could be accessed via some other means. How many famous people are into anime? Something tells me that Quentin Tarantino, Aaron McGruder, and the Wachowski Brothers are anime fans. I know Samuel L. Jackson is a fan of anime. I think Steven Spielberg was a fan of Lupin III. Kirsten Dunst was a fan of Sailor Moon. Who knows who else in the spotlight enjoys anime? Maybe there can be some celebrity-oriented program whose emphasis is finding out who likes what. If a person is a big fan of something, that's great. If anyone tells a fan that "it's not sor me," though, than leave that person alone-- if he or she gets into it in the future, that person will know who to reach. Anime is no different in this regard. Let people come to anime, don't evangelize to the people. They aren't telling anime fans to watch reality shows, so why should anime fans tell people to watch anime? Another thing which should happen to get people to change their minds about anime is to make series for all levels-- anime isn't "just" Pokemon or hentai. This would be easier for an all-anime channel to do, but it can be done if television stations wherever we lived were judicious in selecting which anime gets presented at which times. (HINT: If a series has to be seriously edited to be aired, save it for a later timeslot. From what I've read here at ANN, Cartoon Network learned this the hard way during its initial airing of Neon Genesis Evangelion.) |

there are all-anime cable channels, just none in the U.S. that are in basic cable channels... (like animax in asia) besides, there's a food channel because food is more universial than anime.. good stuff to read about anime stereotypes http://www.ex.org/2.8/45-essay_stereotypes.html http://www.animeinfo.org/animeu/socl125.html |

Firstly, beyond financial stability, why does anime need to be popular?
I remember the days when it WAS a hobby/fascination for geeks, and honestly those were some pretty fun days. Like minded people tend to gather to the same things, and we geeks were pretty like-minded in the days of yore. I certainly would like for people to respect animation as just another form of film, but I don't think that it's necessary for my enjoyment of animation that other people enjoy it. Instead of trying to convert people, why not try and go out to meet people who already share your passion for anime? It'll be much more rewarding. |
