Would any of you guys say it's sometimes weird to watch an anime after reading the manga, due to the characters' voices being different from what you heard in your head when you were reading it? For myself, that was my problem with Shaman King in both languages when it got to introducing Anna. When I heard her voice I was disappointed she didn't sound like Mandy as she did when I read her dialogue in the manga. (For those wondering, Mandy's the blonde girl in the clip). Has that happened to anyone else?

Not often, I rarely imagine actual voices for the characters while I'm reading manga. Though I did find myself weirded out when I watched the Reborn Anime, I never expected Reborn to have such a squeaky voice, and I always thought Gokudera's voice would be on the rough side.
There was also a funny case, when reading Bleach, after Tsukishima's introduction I thought "This guy should be voiced by Daisuke Ono". Then when that part of the manga was announced for the anime, they did cast Ono for Tsukishima, it was pretty cool. |

I don't imagine a dream cast while I'm reading a manga (never a good idea because you'll be disappointed if you had your heart set on a certain actor who doesn't end up cast), but if an animated version is made and characters sound like I imagined while I was reading, it's a very nice bonus. That happened to me with xxxHolic, where most of the main English cast sounded almost exactly like my "head voices".

I can't say it's ever happened since I'm primarily an anime fan and the manga I've read is mostly series with incomplete anime adaptions, where I picked up the manga to get the rest of the storyline. The few exceptions have yet to have had any anime made from them.

My problem is that I know what is going to happen so I lose interest in the anime. I used to watch Fairy Tail, but when I caught up with the episodes I started to read the manga. And of course I lose interest in the anime because I knew what was going to happen. That is why if I know a manga I am reading now will be an anime in the near future, I stop reading it so that I won't be bored of the anime.

I used to have disappointments of that sort, the anime not being how I imagined the story to be as I read the manga. However, as I got more into things like why the character portrayal differences exists or the effects of different order of events in the storyline, I started to realize the differences in the expression potential of animation VS printed paper.
In the end I just accepted the differences because manga was open to variations of interpretations more than the anime. |

This does happen sometimes, but not that often. The only time I can remember was when I watched the first episode of Natsume's Book of Friends, already a big fan of the manga. Natsume's voice bugged me because I thought it was way too deep. I had imagined a softer, more effeminate voice for him. But I got used to it after a couple of episodes because Kamiya acts the part really well. It was weird at first, though.

Exactly what happened to me. The same goes for One Piece. Besides losing interest, my main problem with watching anime after reading the manga is sequencing. Anime adaptations have the tendency to move around manga chapters in order to fit the story line. Sometimes I feel off seeing this manga chapter mixed in with this other chapter in one episode of the anime. I guess the issue here is that I know what's gonna happen, so if I really liked how the plot played out in the manga, I already expect the anime to follow suit. This is the reason why I avoid both reading the manga and watching the anime of any title. Exceptions would be long running shonen shows as well as some shojou titles. I'm a big shojou fan, and sometimes a manga I've finished reading or am currently reading suddenly becomes animated and I get curious. |

That's a good point. While most of the time I don't mind small changes here and there, sometimes they are unnecessary. There are some pointless changes like that in the third season of Natsume's Book of Friends, in which the stories from the manga do not appear in an chronological order. For example: in episodes 10 and 11 of San there is a youkai who tells Natsume that he should talk with his friends about his past experiences, but in the 5th episode of San, even though it's not shown, it's strongly suggested that such a conversation took place, thus the youkai's advice is belated in the anime. |
