recently, I've been enjoying REC, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, and suzuka. my favorites were chobits and kimi ga nozomu eien. I really don't like one of those "sob-fests" and love to see happy endings.

His & Her Circumstances (Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou) is a pretty realistic (except for the exaggerated expressions that come up quite often) romance series. You can really empathize with the characters, since the situations/thinking seems realistic. It really revolves around relationships (not really trying/getting into one but is about being in one) and how people feel during them. I dunno about the "happy endings" part though...the ending is questionable to a lot of people and it says "to be continued (tsudzuku)" at at the end. Still a good series despite the ridiculous amount of 'flashback/recap' in it.
Beck(not licensed) is an anime that revolves around a typical student that becomes part of a rock band, but there is a great romance element to it as well. The relationship aspect was very well done in my opinion. The focus isn't on romance, though.
Love Hina is a pretty classic romance/comedy/harem anime, but you probably saw this already...
School Rumble (not licensed) is quite the opposite (or complement) of His/Her Circumstances in that it's entirely about trying to get a gf/bf and making the confession. The focus is on comedy, though. It's a really fun watch, but definitely lacks seriousness. I guess in that sense it's not exactly a romance/drama series.

i personally would not recommend KareKano on DVD....get it in manga....the DVD storyline is about 20% of what was present in manga....ONLY reason to get it on DVD is to watch it just for the animation....

same thing for Love Hina....they cut out alot on DVD but not as bad as KareKano....still damm good series....

two of my favorite "romantic" movies are from Makoto Shinkai...Voices of the Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days both have great storyline, character designs, music flows with the movie, and both are tear jerkers....

Ah My Goddess is also damm good series....OAV, movie, and the newly released in US TV series all are very well known and for good reason...also great storyline and character design...

Ai Yori Aoshi is also great series....same reason above...

skipping the silly harem series....listing "romantic love" series that I have in my collection are Godannar, Koi Kaze, Sentimental Journey, Seraphim Call, Vision of Escaflowne, and Diamond Daydreams...

course there are millions of "harem" series like Steel Angel Kurumi, Hanaukyo Maid La Verite, Dears, Girls Bravo....

I think if you're looking for something with romance and much (!) drama you should watch Full Moon wo Sagashite.
That's only if you can endure its childish first half (not that it is ONLY childish, but there are definitely less serious parts in the first half). I enjoyed all the episodes, but the last 10-15 parts...it made it into my top 10 basically because of these ending episodes! I'm sure you'll shed a few tears and the romance is great too ^^

I'm going to put my two cents in and say that you'll have to try Fushigi Yugi. Lots of Romance, Action and Drama in one delicious package. This is a harem anime, 1 girl/7 guys. Two junior high school girls are sucked into a book, one is made the priestess for a god and has to locate her guardian warriors so that all of them can protect the country she ended up in. Her best friend becomes the priestess for the enemy country. Lots of angst, trial, tribuations, betrayals, ect. But to me it is one of my favorites and a classic. The anime has been out and even re-released here in the States and the manga is due to finish with the final volume in April.

Another that you might consider is Marmalade Boy. That is about a boy and a girl whose parents divorce and trade partners and they all live as one big "happy" family until the two kids begins to spoiler[fall in love with each other]. Lots of angst in this one as well not to mention questionable activities Laughing Wink between the two young people spoiler[who may be closer than they want to know.]

Both are good series. Hope that you do find what you want to see next.
