There are already several awards given specifically to animated films, such as the Annies, and - obviously - the Oscar for Best Animated Film.

In the years that the Annies have been handed out for Best Film, only Spirited Away has brought the award home to anime.

Howl's Moving Castle, Millenium Actress, and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, have all received nominations.

If you're new, you should know that people have a tendancy to be mean here, and most people think that everything you say is sarcastic.

So, now that that's out of the way, I think it's fine that you introduced yourself here, because you also included your question/discussion topic in the same post. Of cource, I'm just a normal person here, but I don't see anything wrong with it.

Anyway, "Masterpiece Award?" I would say that there would need to be different categories, like the Oscars. In fact, if there isn't one already, I think I'll make one like that for all categories.

Sorry. Ok, Masterpiece: I would have to say FLCL. Masterpiece may be the only true way to describe it. It accomplished in only 6 episodes what most anime can hardly ever grasp. It told a complete story, with characters that evolved before our very eyes. The characters were human in than there was no good, no evil, only combinations of the two. The entire town seemed disconnected from the real world, which set up perfectly for us to believe the events that happened, and everyone reacted as their personality would. The music fits perfectly with the mood. The animation is the best I've ever seen. And above all, it's just plain fun.

My vote for Masterpiece goes to Fooly Cooly (FLCL).

Ok, a couple of things. First of all, to the OP, if you are going to prompt a "what is best" question, then you should give your input as well. Second, nobody here is mean, I have no idea what unbrokenaero is talking about when he said that. Third, the real awards are only for movies, and they're not voted by anime fans like us. Having said that, this thread is perfectly fine.

As for a masterpiece, I disagree with unbrokenaero about FLCL because I have no idea what the story is supposed to be about and basically watched it for the mysteriousness and the laughs. I'd have to go with Mushishi for masterpiece. The show itself is very non-controversial, and tells a story that most people would fall in love with. It's about people working hard, trying to live, and making the right decisions. Every episode has its own story, and they're all very touching. Music and animation were all brilliant fitting the mood perfectly. In the end, it's a complete series about humans trying to live with mushis, and how they can live together to the best possible.

I do run an Annual Anime Awards at another site. I really don't think I'll do it here though.

Giant Robo would undoubtedly win.

If more than, like, twenty people had seen it.

How can something that practically no one has seen win a masterpiece award?
Anyway I'd probably have to agree that FLCL would win, for all those same reasons that unbrokenaero said.
Well either FLCL, or Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion, i'd have to tie all three of those for the award, or nominate those.

You should get votes from other people before you hand out an award.

Meh, I'm going with a classic... Ghost in the Shell.

It was well laid out, and offered a stunning vision of the future. A future that we may all find ourselves in one day. The animation is supurb and the storyline is mixed with that heavy philisophical sense... "If we lose our bodies but keep our mind, are we really human?" and "can something created by man gain a soul?"
These deep rooted issues intertwine perfectly with the ever enticing plot and beautiful action scenes. I'm sure we can all remember the fight scene with the cloaked individual in the water, or the tank scene at the end.

Both riviting and moving, this anime film "Reigns Supreme!"

Since you're new to the site, you may not be aware that we do maintain a list of series with the highest average ratings from thousands of fans. That list can be found here, which is also accessible off of the Anime option on the Encyclopedia subsection. Check it out, that will give you a good idea of series that a lot of people consider to be "masterpieces."

So you're saying that popularity = masterpiece?

Dang, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Dragonball Z must be the Holy Trinity of anime.

Macross: Do You Remember Love?

It's, well, perfect.

[EDIT: Claiming something is "perfect" without any kind of explanation it's, well, stupid. Very Happy Edit your post by the end of the day, or it'll be, well, deleted. Very Happy -TK]
