So, I've checked out Azumanga Daioh and loved it, and now want to own it properly (also the d/l I used to check it out is missing the final 3 episodes - please don't beat me much on this as I don't own a TV, am too buzy/lazy to go to a local anime soc., and wouldn't be thinking about purchasing at all if I hadn't been able to get a d/l).
I'm in the UK and will be buying through eBay UK, on which I can buy either the no region DVD box set with Japanese and English language options and English subs, or the 6 individual DVDs with extras (but not the pin badges mentioned in the ANN review  ). Is it worth it for the extras, given that it more than triples the cost of purchase - I'm poor (student) and although I love the series I don't want to throw money away on rubbish extras.
Listed extras on the fancy DVD vol. 1 are: Clean opening and closing animations Production sketches ADV previews Comments from the Japanese staff Art study on the Chiyo character Interactive menu Scene access Just to give you an idea of what extras I'd be getting. Any thoughts? |

Personally I'd get the individual DVD's if there isnt a completely reliable looking set available I'd go for the extra cost. I just did a quick check on amazon.co.uk and the only boxed sets I could find were region 1 so I didn't see the region 2 one. Did you perchance look at the marketplace bit? If you did I'd not go for it even if it looked 100% legit, people are sneaky and bootlegs are all too common and off of the main Amazon parts its not well policed so bootlegger havens.

Do not buy that if you value quality. That is a blatant bootleg and generally have terrible quality as opposed to the offical releases. The DVDs from ADV UK are definitely worth your money. But being that you live in the UK, I don't know of any stores you can purchase from. If you have a Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, or Borders, look there. (Either in person or online.) |

Yes its £90 for them seperately and £22 for the illegal bootleg release. Quality and legality should matter above all else, as youve already seen the series you can get the DVD's at a leisurely pace when you have the money. If no legitimate retailer sells it but some person is selling it on an auction site then 99.999% of the time it will be a bootleg, especially if its that much cheaper. So dont go supporting bootleggers, and shame on who let you get those already liscenced series on download. |

Ta very much - one dubious purchase avoided. I don't buy much anime (because of poverty, not frequent theft via d/l), and so don't always know what to look for when trying to avoid copies etc on-line. Should probably pay more attention to the retail forum! (indeed am checking it out now *edit* such a blatant knock-off I feel like a fool for even asking!)
Aside from that, can anyone offer any thoughts on the value for money of the extras? I can always buy a multi-region DVD player and get my US mates to buy the region 1 box set (thin pak - Class Album release) for me, if I wont be missing out on something fascinating (those character art studies sound *really* interesting!). For the record I'm something of an extras geek, assuming those extras are actually informative and not just bunged on to bulk the product out. To answer the OP, I think rightstuf.com ships overseas, and they have some of the single discs for under $10 per disc. I decided to get the single discs (after having watched it on fansub, btw) because of the cheap prices and the extras...the key thing is the DVD insert booklets, which have great explanations on the jokes and cultural elements of the series. Still, I wouldn't say they're essential, so if you can get the legitimate box set for a good price, that'd be a good buy.

the main concern on shipping to the UK is that unless I buy bulk (all 6 at once, minimum) it can be silly expensive. As I have friends in the UK who flit across the Atlantic a few times a year I can probably hang on, but thanks for the price tips. I suppose it could wait until I can afford the R2 UK issue, which I hope includes the booklets (I own the manga, so I have some of that material, but I'd like to have more details on how the anime dealt with that humour - some of the differences are really quite interesting: contrary to popular belief there is a story arc in AZMD, and it clearly shifts from manga to anime ad the jokes change subtly with it). If I can still find the perfect edition with the pins that'd rock some huge bells. Thanks for the defence inre d/l's - just for the record I was being a tard on issues of authenticity (i.e. not knowing how to check it - problem now fixed) and didn't intend to buy a bootleg, hence the questions in the posts about whether anyone owned a version like the one listed and if it was legit. As far as I'm concerned I've either purchased every anime I've downloaded, which I otherwise would never have seen and would therefore never have spent money on, or decided I don't like/want it and delete it - I don't want to purchase it so I shouldn't own a copy of it. It might not be legal, but without an expensive satellite subscription its the closest I can get to ethical and a damn sight more convenient than hoping I luck out with the TV schedules. Incidentally, where do people such as Hentai4Me stand on Tivo? Is it also the fount of all evil? *sarcasm* - please don't spend all your time attacking the mick-taking as you know what I'm getting at really. V |

If I remember correctly, the Azu DVDs are $6.99 each and the vol. 1 w/ box $9.99 at rightstuf.com. Not sure how much that is in pounds (pardon my ignorance, please), but that's crazy cheap; they're on clearance there because of the thinpak release, so the quantities are limited. Also, I'm going to agree with Zalis and recommend the 12-page DVD booklets that come with the 6 DVDs rather than the thinpaks, they're very informative. Well, at least they are if you're not well-versed in certain subtleties of Japanese culture like me. |

A few months ago I got a box set for Hanukah. It was the legit thing from ADV. The only difference between the individual DVDs and ADV's boxset in the boxset had no extras. Otherwise, they are the same. I also found the boxset very easy to store.
