Why is manga done in black and white. I find that the few manga I have read are hard to read due to that fact. Most of the time I can't even tell what's going on in a page. Why don't they just do it in colour?

Well, in the comic-making process, coloring can be time-consuming, and usually is done by a different member of the staff (i.e. colorist). In America comics are often released, say, monthly versus weekly, and are drawn by a team of artists and writers. In Japan, comics are usually released on a weekly basis, and are done by a single creator and his assitants. So while color manga does exist it's rare because of the time constraints involved.

It's also a lot cheaper to make a black and white tank/GN, which is why even pages that are in colour are often put in black and white when collected in a bound volume. The full-colour pages usually only appear in the original serialization of the chapter they proceed/are part of.

Yeah! it is cheap, and ink color it is expensive. Plus the manga would cost more if they are in color.

Well there are some exceptions to that group i.e. Vagabond and some tokyopop titles. |

The time it takes to color pages and the cost involved in producing full-color books are both very good reasons as to why manga is in black and white. To those reasons, I would like to add the fact that black and white with tones is really the traditional format of manga.
American comics and Japanese manga developed differently. America went for color, Japan went for layers of tones. All it really is is a stylistic difference, but the fact remains that by now it is tradition. ~Shadrach Anki |

And maybe also with those prices of printing it in black and white we can have tankoubon, unlike American comics where you get one issue of a magazine for the same price (Japanese tankoubon price equivalent)

There's always an exception to the rule, but generally it is very rare that you find manga in colour for more than a page or two. |

Well, there's always film manga (?) which is manga that's like screen shots taken from the episodes and they are colored. I saw some Inuyasha film manga (I'm not sure if that's the name) in Borders the other day. |

Some times it's called "animanga", but I have a question about it. Is it ever done in Japan? I've seen Viz likes to do it, like with Inuyasha and the first Yu-Gi-Oh! movie that was released over here, but I was wondering if it was common or done at all in Japan. Anybody know? |

Yeah! I'm pretty sure that was the name of it. "Animanga". As for if they do it in Japan, I'm not sure. They have released film comics of the Naruto movies in Japan. Look at the description of the product. It says:
That has to be animanga in Japan. Other than that, I'm not too sure. |

Film comics/Animanga are most certainly done in Japan. They're more of a collector's merchandise item than a mass produced work, but they do exist. ~Shadrach Anki |

I usually don't group those with the rest of manga, since they are their own category, at least IMO. |
