Does anybody know anything about this film? I've been looking around on the web for information on it and cannot find a thing. I get lots of response for the book though. I'm interested in this film because I just watched Night on the Galactic Railroad and I want to see more by Gisaburô Sugii and hear more by the music director who also directed the music in Murasaki Shikibu Genji Monogatari. The film was released in 1987 but the encyclopedia article doesn't have any other information, including a synopsis or ratings. Anybody have anything on this film? Bad? Good? Comparison to Night on the Galactic Railroad?

I found some articles about the Genji Monogatari anime. http://picpal.com/genji.html http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295455/ http://www.abcb.com/genji/index.htm http://www.amazon.com/Tale-Genji-Sub/dp/6303578055/ref=cm_lmf_tit_1/105-7704496-5077248 As to the composer, Hosono Haruomi is a musician who was a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra. His grand father was a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruomi_Hosono It seems that Amazon.com has some CDs by Hosono Haruomi. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_1/102-0549204-1700906?ie=UTF8&keywords=haruomi%20hosono&rh=n%3A301668%2Ck%3Aharuomi%20hosono&page=1 |

Well, it's a shame that the music was criticized - I loved the score in Night on the Galactic Railroad. I'm a bit disappointed that the film has been labeled too slow to endure, but Night on the Galactic Railroad sounds similar in some ways - especially the 'simplistic' art. I've been put off watching this film now, even though the background to it all is intriguing, being the animated adaptation of Tales of Genji (which I didn't know until now

I managed to see most of it at a film festival back in 2002 (missed the beginning because I was caught in traffic). Unfortunately I believe that particular print caught fire and was destroyed so I never got to see the rest of it at a later screening. It feels as slow as the Miyazawa work, but is just as visually stimulating in many places. Plot-wise, is is a more political film than the Miyazawa, as the court intrigues take precedence over the spiritual ethos of the time. The major annoyance is that it feels incomplete because it ends at a major plot point without really resolving any of the main issues. I wouldn't recommend it for light viewing - it's a real mood piece that doesn't say much but says it in a worthwhile way. |
