i recently asked a few anime forums what series they thought had the best dub.
cowboy bebop and full metal alchemist were the most stated. but i noted that no one really replied with a recent dub job. as in the last few years. well, 2 people said bleach (and that drew quick rebuttals.) what do you all think is the best dub? and do you believe that the general bar is higher, but there hasn't been anything outstanding in a while? |

I would add FLCL to the list of amazing dubs, although once again that is not a recent title. I don't know if there are any recent dubs that blew me away, but there have been some that are good. Bleach is actually quite a good dub when you consider how many characters need to be voiced in that show, and how distinctive many of the voices are in the Japanese audio track. I think that the main characters are dubbed very well, and the translations are pretty decent. The Haruhi dub is pretty good, but I can't really think of anything since FLCL that really blew me away dub wise. I dunno, depends on what your cutoff is for "recent."

I personally don't find Bleach to be all that grand of a dub, so I can understand the rebuttal.
The most recent great release + great dub would have to be Black Lagoon. Solid voice acting in keeping with the awesome action in the show. I am really looking forward to hearing Death Note as well, which like Bleach, is a Viz title. So hopefully it is better. |

Stand Alone Complex is a dub I rate highly, in fact I've yet to get around to listening to the Japanese version (unlike the odd show like Nadesico, Elfen Lied and Higurashi where I flipped over pretty sharpish)

As I said in the Sub. Vs. Dub thread, End of Evangelion has the single greatest dub you will ever find. It's a concrete, irrefutable fact. End of story.
Spike Spencer's performance alone puts it head and shoulders above the Japanese version, which is saying a lot for me, since I otherwise prefer subtitled. |

I definitely think that the bar is higher. Or at least it was high, and now that the industry is seeing a lull, the bar's average is being brought down by outsourcing titles to places like Singapore to do dubs.
They have definitely improved on writing/translating and sync, but when it all comes down to it, its what you hear in the dub that matters most. If the qual of acting is poor, it definitely brings down the overall average of the dubs. hopefully we get out of this swoon soon. |

i agree that the end of eva dub was an outstanding job. more dubs should exhibit that kind of effort.
