Since Disney had to renew their contract on all the films a few years ago, it's very possible they don't have this anymore, and Ghibli and GKIDS are planning a release.

I'd agree to take all rumors with a grain of salt, but the idea that it's the same From Up on Poppy Hill producer, now that Disney's finally gotten past the idea that they don't have to wrestle with releases for every unmarketable period-slice-of-life Ghibli dub that GKids can take up the slack of selling to the arthouse market, it should free up a bit of distribution.
If GKids could sell Poppy Hill to an art-anime audience, they can sure as heck sell this.
Meanwhile, I know that My Neighbors the Yamadas is still caught in Disney's clutches, since Disney did that one "themselves", but still doesn't know how to sell non-Miyazaki Ghibli. |
Actually, according to the GKIDS interview on ANNCast, they actually had to outbid Disney to get Poppy Hill, Princess Kaguya, and Marnie.
And Disney DOES know how to sell non-Miyazaki Ghibli films. They treat them little differently. Yamadas is the only one they HAVEN'T released to Blu-ray, probably because it's DVD didn't sell well. They did a good job with Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns, Arietty, and even Pom Poko and Earthsea. All are on Blu-ray.

I have the UK release of this but I think I would double dip on a BR for this. One of my most favorite Ghibli Films.

Well, they definitely confirmed with me that they don't have it. But it's probably more like they let their rights lapse on it, since they kept the other stuff.

Outbidding probably involves giving those films wider distribution and promotion than Disney would. Not necessarily higher licensing fees. 'Cus I'm sure that Ghibli is well aware that GKids has nowhere near the same deep pockets as Disney.

If they want to, they'll exploit the 'From the Oscar-nominated director of Kaguya' angle on that one, too. They could do the same with Pom Poko.

Basically there's a good 10 minutes about menstruation, but its more about them discovering their bodies so to speak.

There was nothing wrong with the scene and their reasoning reminds me of the production code not allowing films/tv showing married couples in the same bed. Menstruation is a normal part of life. The fact they were afraid to show this to kids is ridiculous.

Maiden: It's not the menstruation. They don't want to receive complaints about little boys harassing little girls in school because they saw a 'cartoon'.

Except that if you had a Wikipedia page I could edit it to say that you starred in several porn films. I couldn't do that on Linkedin. OTOH, if I had my own Wikipedia page and added that I had an uncredited role in something, I wouldn't be able to prevent it being removed as unsourced, but I can put what I like on my Linkedin and it is up to you to decide whether to believe my and my referees.
If, for example, Andrew Partridge mentioned a new license on her personal Twitter would you not believe it until it came from the Anime Limited account? Or do you just have some particular reason for calling this guy a liar?

Seriously, this kind of "lie" on LinkedIn would kill you professionally. It's not padding your resume.
I can't wait for this. This is my favorite Ghibli movie. How often does anyone make an animated movie for ordinary adult women? The answer is never, except for this one.

I am really glad that this is finally getting an english dub because that movie is really universally relatable regardless of how old you are or where you are from. At least it felt that way when I saw it the first time.

Well, the background art for that Ghibli Twitter is now from Only Yesterday. So it's all but confirmed at this point.
