Nice thread. I hadn't thought about it that far, but it's pretty true with how the society of show is dystopia. There are some exaggerations, sure, but it works because it's a comedy, and it works pretty damn well. I had a lot of laughs.

And it's being adapted by J.C. Staff, arguably the leader in rubbish light novel adaptations, with almighty gems such as Aria the Scarlet Ammo.

That is so not true. J.C. Staff IS one the better studios for adapting LNs; Hidan no Aria wasn't even a bad adaptation, I've read the novel and the anime follows well. But alright; whatever floats your boat.

I haven't gotten around to watching Shinometa, didn't seem like my cup of tea. But maybe I'll give it a shot after reading this.

Quote:
In the first episode of SHIMONETA, two teenage boys are spreading stories about what they heard happens if they touch their cucumber too much, and come to the conclusion that it could fall off.

My dad actually will not touch his cucumber to this day since his super-religious mother drilled it into him as a kid that it would fall off. Of course, it's not like he still believes that's true, but finds the idea of playing with oneself to be completely disgusting and just can't bring himself to do it. How to teach your children to fear sex 101! xD

I really appreciated what Shimoneta was trying to comment on, but I don't think it really did a very good job. I didn't hate it, but it was much too juvenile for me, in the long run. I guess I just generally appreciate a little bit more seriousness in my dystopic stories.

Wow! Reading this article, I'm going to have to watch that... It was one that I passed over because it sounded stupid. It may still be stupid, but if it is stupid with a reason, I'll give it a shot... I love dystopian future stories, after all...

Not that I've watched it, but from what I read in episode reviews etc my reason for not picking up Shimoneta was precisely that it took what you consider a cyberpunk-esque premise, & just used it to facilitate the usual "hilarious" overreactions & misunderstandings that normally pass for sex humour in anime. It might have made for a better premise if the masked avengers were fighting against a system that wasn't just a bunch of prudish adults, but were purposely keeping the population ignorant because they knew sex education is linked to declining birthrates & women's liberation (there's an angle that fits modern Japan). But from the sounds of it, it's just dick jokes & the usual kids fighting the school council malarkey & hoping no one remembers Hentai Kamen. Could be wrong, but have yet to be convinced it's worth finding out.

Kind of confusing since arguably the first rubbish LN adaptation they've done in a while was Shimoneta. Whatever message they were trying to get across was just obscured by a bunch of penis jokes. It was fun for what it was but trying to imply it's making some sort of deep social commentary is stretching things. It was more like they used their social commentary as an excuse to be as crude as possible as opposed to using that crudeness to drive a message.

As someone who has actually seen Shimoneta and liked it, I think one aspect that the reviewer didn't talk about which makes this interesting is that the "prudish authorities" want fringe groups to arise so that those who oppose anti-pornography legislation can be "shown" to be really disgusting deviants and so require the passage or more draconian legislation. However, be warned that there are plenty of double entendre' and jokes which are juvenile and people going "over the top" in reactions but that I find to provide the comedy. I wouldn't call it stupid, but it isn't intellectual either. And of course there is what I find refreshing in that the supposed love interest Anna is made out to be a psycho-rapist and our "hero" is drawn to the obnoxious but caring intellectual leader of SOX, Ayame. This was my second favorite from the last season, mostly because it made me laugh so much I ended up crying. I wasn't that aware of the relationship the show has with that somewhat oppresive law, though. I knew the premise had to do with the consequences of extreme censorship in the society, but not that is was specifically based on that law.

I prefered Shimoneta when SOX were doing "perorist" attacks and messing with the government. On the other hand, the Wihte Peak arc was a bit weak. The only thing that saved it was EP 11: spoiler[Ayame's speech about porn and why it's OK to watch it was touching!]

I'm still waiting for the DUB, though. C'mon FUNI, this show deserves a DUB, do it please! Sad

I appreciate the effort put into this article in terms of actually informing readers about the things that inspired Shimoseka. I don't think the show took itself seriously enough to be an actual commentary on those things, but it certainly made more people aware of them.

I hope Funi dubs this as well. They have anime with much cruder humor (panty and stocking). With the number of dirty jokes and innuendos in this show i would not be surprised if they got Jamie Marchi to be writer. She usually works on shows like these.

To an extent I agree but Shimoneta was funny and at least did do some over the top risque things. It is those fanservice comedies which are bland and unoriginal the industry could do without.

On the subject I actually agree with blocking porn by default on computers as it does not show genuine sex. Too much of it is OTT, certainly funny but not titallating (mostly it is written for men rather than women, not all men are into bukkake) and as adults entering a password is hardly the end of the world.

OOORRRR you could be a smart adult and block/password protect those sites if you have children you don't want to see it instead of inconveniencing everyone else.

Regarding the show, I found it to be highly enjoyable. Of course, there is that somewhat unsatisfactory feeling of not having a complete story arc, but that's to be expected of an adaptation of an on-going series. Half the fun is waiting for a second season, I guess. (^o^)

The character that makes the show for me? Anna. She is, in my opinion, one of the funniest characters ever in anime (pornographic or not). Not only is she willing to push all sorts of boundaries, she does so unapologetically and with such earnestness that she's literally a treat to watch on-screen. Would buy Anna merchandise if they actually bothered to produce any. Well, not sure how far I can get into spoiler territory, so I'll be stopping for now.

Regarding the actual show itself, it definitely is a blatant commentary of where our society might be headed if we aren't open to discussion and opposing/controversial points of view that challenge conventional wisdom.

...but I'm not going to discuss the actual issue any further as it might derail the thread (like it already has with so many others).

P.S. Binkan-chan is the true best character of the show!

Can you spot her in every episode?

Same here. I'm a big Psycho Pass fan but I passed on Shimoneta because it looked pretty trashy despite the interesting premise. But after reading the article, I'm gonna check it out.
