Holy crap this sounds awesome. I love historically based films like this, and King's Speech, and The Wind Rises, where even if they play with the truth a bit they're still trying to build up interest in historical figures.
And this one sounds like it's choosing someone utterly fascinating to focus on. It doesn't hurt that the 19th century is one of my favourite periods of history to research either.
So, in other words, I'm definitely on board for this one and am truly excited that this has been licensed for distribution in North America. I'm definitely going to be checking it out!

I am also happy that someone is (I assume) releasing this movie on BD in N.A. I recently watched this movie, and I absolutely loved it.

sounds like the same plot as the recent tim burton film, big eyes. it was not very good, but i am sure this anime feature will be far better executed.

Wait a sec, back up; this STILL hasn't been shown in American theatres? What the hell America?! I saw it in Australia last year for god sake; what's taking you so long?
Can someone explain this?

Well, you folks also got Urasawa's Monster, so who knows. (I will never not be bitter about that.)

I've got no clue. I feel for you man; we get this all the time with American shows.
It seems like America doesn't think there's a market for anime films. I've been to several films in the past year (Mrs Hokusai, Boy and the Beast, then re-release of Only Yesterday) and every time it was packed, particularly with this film. No idea why this is the case in America; don't you have a larger population?

More dispersed too, so only in the big melting pot cities which can be hundreds of miles away for a lot of people (usually NY, LA, SF then everything else is a crap-shoot; if you're in the central plains you're pretty much SOL)

Although I think that anyone who teaches Japanese art history would love to have a copy for reference.
