Huh, so Nobuhiro Watsuki only pays 200,000 yen for having child pornography, while this person who mod a few games gets a 300,000 yen charge. Then again, if Nobuhiro Watsuki was modding the games and selling them he probably wouldn't get charge that high. Anyway, the fine should be around a jaywalking ticket.

I've got a modded 3ds and I can guess as to what he did. Likely, he had copied a game save from one of his Pokemon cartridges and modified it on a pc. Then he transferred the game save back on to a legit Pokemon cartridge. |

Yeah, it happened in the long-ago year of... last year. 
Yeah, no. I'm of the mind that you really shouldn't be testing your luck and modding the content of one of the most watchful companies that really doesn't like content mods, but modding a game shouldn't incur a higher fine than possession of child pornography. |

Well, for one, Watsuki had legally acquired all his collection before changes in the law made it illegal to purchase AND to possess the stuff (which is seriously bonkers, law regarding physical and data media should not be retroactive, if you don't know why, it's your problem), however, he did buy a few more items throughout the years after the law was enforced, which is what eventually caused the whole ordeal (afaik, he collected those ever since he was 14).
Now, this new "law" the japanese have made is simply retarded, the individual sale of modified data on cartridges is not something the law should intervene with unless it's part of an organised group that does this, and what this man did was simply copy save data into new cartridges of the game, previously edited on a PC. ANYONE can do this, if people pay for it, let them. And going after the store because they suspect they might be related to this because they sold a machine that allows you to transfer save data from a 3DS cartridge into the PC and vice versa? Nuts. The next time there's a murder, we must investigate all the arms manufacturers, designers and testers, as well as the knife industry because they are suspects of involvement with the murders. |

Thank God for the right of first sale in the US. I'm sure there's some other sort of DMCA garbage that technically makes things similar to this illegal here too, though I highly doubt it'd be enforced.

Every year, Japanese authorities hire much more than enough police officers for the crime rates that they have. They literally can and do assign thousands of police officers for a single manhunt............... of a fugitive thief: "Japan's gripping manhunt ends in capture"
