i'm guessing the manga artists switched to oil instead of ink.

Creators following erotic artists is pretty common. A lot have drawn it themselves and even got their start in doujinshi. I guess western fans finding that out was shocking to them so they went after him.

Not looking forward for both “creator must be 100% pure” nor “art has no effect on reality” camps that are going out of the woodwork for another round.

While I don’t think he deserves the spotlight, I do think it’s worth checking on how artists like Oowara sees realistic loli art and marvel at the craft but not feel shame/disgust of it. The problem with loli imo is not so much it exists but how relatively acceptable it is compared to stuff like guro or vore.

I think it’s symptomatic in relation of the gender dynamic and expectations in Japan, though aggressively attacking the symptom that people did is in no way a path to actual improvement.

I'm not sure who wrote the translation of the guy's tweets that appears in the ANN article, but it's fairly inaccurate, both in content and in tone. Here is a better translation:

Quote:

I was openly following some 3DCG artists because I thought it would be good reference material and suddenly people overseas decided I'm a pedophile. This sucks. I really don't get it... Anyway, I don't have anything to say beyond "Oh, I see." Apparently they view photorealistic art as somehow different from 2D.

Like, this actually happens pretty often, I just don't usually talk about it.

I know this kind of thing tends to turn into "How do you explain yourself? There's no excusing this." But all I can say is "Uh, idk".

You know what, I don't even care. In fact, when I heard people were talking about me following a certain ero mangaka, this stuff is the last thing I was expecting it to be about.

And that's all I have to say about that. I'm going back to [Ghost of] Tsushima now.

As long as there's no evidence humans are harmed this really shouldn't be an issue. But the big thing in this case is that people follow others in the same line of work. Often times they draw porn of whatever genres, and often times they do "normal" art. It's not a big deal and it doesn't mean he's into it or anything like that. I can look at guro art and think the art is amazing while still being disgusted by guro. Really a non issue. And I doubt he stopped following them. He probably either has a 2nd account or has them bookmarked the old fashioned way

I'm fine with the anime/manga/game characters, no harm going on there but I'd be wary of any 3d loli art that isn't some character from another work or isn't stated that it's being used in a game or such, you never know.

It's one thing when this happens on Twitter, it's actually expected at this point given how toxic that site is with its PC cancel culture, but the problem is that news sites report on random people/troll's opinions as if they matter. I do give Owara props for essentially telling them he doesn't care. But then why unfollow the accounts? He should've just ignored/blocked the trolls instead of addressing them. Now he's gonna get more crap because of his dismissive tone. You have to either ignore the bully or punch them out; can't do the latter via the internet.

Not thrilled to learn that the manga artist for Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! likes 2D and 3D illustrations of children in sexual situations. Ugh.

It's very bizarre to see people acting like being opposed to that kind of material is just people being "PC," "woke," "cancel culture," and other buzzwords when the vast majority of people on any end of the political spectrum find that stuff extremely uncomfortable at best (seriously, the left wing is absolutely NOT the only group that's censored anime or manga or ever pushed for such things). I'm sure One Million Moms and the PTC wouldn't be down with content like this and they are definitely not "woke" groups.

Do I necessarily think a person should be put through the wringer for following an artist who produces questionable material? No, of course not, and I don't think it necessarily means they want to hurt children. I also don't think the absolute hellscape that is Twitter is in any way the right forum for discussing things like this. But I'm definitely with the person upthread who said the problem with this sort of content is that the fans don't see why it might be as upsetting and controversial to some as guro is.

It honestly reads more like he was under the impression that 2D is pedophilic but 3D was not...?

Not gonna say he's a pedo or whatever because following the artist doesn't necessarily mean that. But I saw the art he was following (before he unfollowed it) and while I wouldn't call what I saw (which was only a small number of images, I didn't want to look at the galleries) child porn, it was pretty sketchy.

I can understand following stuff for reference and that it doesn't mean he's a pedo, but it's definitely a bad look.
Like, the point of contention here is that it was hyper-realistic 3d child sexualisation renders. This isn't just a case of "oh they like loli manga", the renders actually looked quite realistic and had a bunch of young look girls posing in skimpy clothes. When you see an artist following content like that, your first thought probably isn't "oh he's using that as reference". (That might be your second thought, I know it was for me, but my first thought was "yikes").

You have the right to believe that. But that doesn't mean you are right. You know what they say about opinions and a certain body part. And they usually smell like crap. This applies to your opinion and mine too.
