I did not enjoy this movie. The production was nice, but narratively? It spent so much time on the social structure of the Ooku, introducing tonnes of characters and then rushing through a fairly undeveloped conflict before the credits rolled. The next entry appears to be a direct sequel, so I assume some of this is just exposition for those, but as a standalone film it didn't work for me.
If you're not familiar with this franchise, don't make this your point of introduction. |

I love the movie and I’m so excited we’re getting two more. I watched it three times, once each night, after it came to Netflix. Two in Japanese and one in English. (Yay Crispin Freeman!) Watching it in English was helpful so I could just focus on the visuals, which are definitely overwhelming, but also stunning.
I do have to admit I missed Sakurai’s voice as MS a bit, but I completely understand his recasting, especially given the story. And I think Kamiya did a fantastic job, and I really like his take on the character. I’m looking forward to watching the movie many more times in the future. |

I am tempted to watch it on Netflix, even the dub seems good. According to BTVA it has Crispin Freeman, who might be the only person who could play the character in English.
