I was hoping a review of this would cover what a comparative bargain this GKids release is. It's significantly cheaper than even a standard blu-ray only release from anyone else, and they got it out in half the time.

I've always assumed that the year-ish wait for discs was a contractual thing when they're licensed, and maybe it still is, but it's apparently possible to do this much faster. If it is a contract thing, it's pretty impressive that GKids can do better than Crunchyroll there.

SHONEN PROTAGONIST MOTIVATIONS:

Naruto: I wanna be Hokage!

Ash: I wanna be a Pokemon Master!

Gon: I wanna find my dad!

Luffy: I wanna find the One Piece!

Okarun: They took my balls.

Seriously, Dan Da Dan is great because it takes setups we've seen before in this genre but then executes them in ways no one has ever tried. It feels like it's pushing the "teens hunt yokai" genre forward via sheer absurdity (and just the right amount of sincere emotion.) It's one of those shows that doesn't sound impressive when described to you, but if you sit down and watch an episode you'll get it pretty much right away. Just a great accomplishment.

At this point, I think GKids should just start licensing more TV anime. The fact that they put this much care into Dandadan's release and made it accessible and affordable shows they know what they're doing. Seriously, I'd trust these guys with shows like Bocchi The Rock and Laid-Back Camp more than I do CR! How is there not a home video release for Laid-Back Camp yet?! Or the newly dubbed Natsume's Book of Friends seasons for that matter?!

I have a friend’s birthday coming up, and when I saw the review for this, I was worried the fast turnaround meant it would be a barebones release. Very happy to be proven wrong! Very Happy

It's always great when a show is as fantastic subbed as it is dubbed.

The chapter stop thing bugged me too when I first noticed it. Such an odd design quirk. But other than that, a great set for a great show. One I wish was more of a template for Crunchyroll and the other few remaining anime licensors in the U.S. That is to say, fast release, good packaging, reasonable price.

The faster release is likely because Dandadan is produced by Science Saru who is owned by Toho and Toho now also owns Gkids.

On the note of those credits, I was also disappointed by the lack of subtitles to accompany both theme songs.

Yeah, I've noticed that some GKids releases have this problem. Not sure if it's on every one of their releases, but I know it was like this with Castle In The Sky. I need to check if its the same with The Colors Within. But yeah, for as great as GKids is, that's one area they do need to improve on.

A lot of times the availability of theme song subtitles is down to what the Japanese licensors will allow and distributors can't always include subtitles for lyrics without that approval as they need to be given the approved lyrics by the licensors to translate it.
