Damn, this franchise is still able to basically print money?! I really need to get around to either starting the manga source material or the anime first... (most likely the manga since it's finished)

Very well deserved! I hate myself for one time doubting if it could surpass the Mugen Train record. Now I know much better; it was never really carried by the COVID. It was carried by its strengths. And now that it's in its climatic arc, I guess it's time to prove that crystal clear.

Yet to surpass the overall gross of Mugen train, but it's very well on track, so I'm sure really curious to see where it put its stop, as well as the subsequent movies. And with how more it's known in the west since Mugen train, how much it grosses there is a curious case worth following for sure!

You really should! Both the anime and manga are perfect starting points; they're both great. That said, this series has a insane hit-or-miss ratio. You'll either walk away wondering why it's even so popular, or think it's perfectly rated and deserves all its success. Either way, be sure to ignore all the hate and praise and numbers as you dive in ✌️

I'm both happy and sad. Happy that the series gets the attention it deserves and sad that this might further convince other series to take the movie road in the future, which I detest...

Mugen Train basically proved the potential of canon-anime movie business model. Yes it had been done before, but none had reached the level of success Mugen Train did. So now they all want in on it.

I find the movie route to be a double-edged sword. A movie has much higher production values than a usual run so its more likely to look better animation-wise. However, we also lose out on other important stuff like an OP/ED for the show. Yes there is usually a song at the end credits but it doesnt have the same impact as an actual OP/ED & as a result, makes them less memorable imo. There's also the inevitable process of cutting chunks of content from the source material because it needs to fit into the hour & a half movie model.

Overall, I'd much prefer a series format especially if its a fairly long arc thats being adapted. If its something on the scale of Mugen Train, then its ok because I heard that the arc was relatively short so it made more sense to turn it into a film.

Well, isn't it a good thing the movie is 155 minutes then? and not only nothing was cut but they also did anime exclusive scenes and added more stuff.
I'd wager part 2 and 3 will be even longer than 155 minutes.

Is it worse than having an anime adaptation with jank or outright bad animation? Especially one that might not adapt the entirety of what it’s adapting?

To be fair this process is just as likely to happen with the TV.

Lord knows how many anime even in the modern era routinely cut out (or weirdly) rearrange scenes from the source.

I don't think this applies to popular series that go the movie route for a specific arc. These series usually already have superb animation, and it's almost certain they'll be fully adapted. Obviously, the only reason is money. Demon Slayer's apparent success will no doubt push other series in the same direction—and that's what bothers me the most. For example, if Attack on Titan had done something similar with its final arc, I would’ve lost it (even as a manga reader Anime hyper). Imagine waiting that long for the story to conclude. Or say a series like Frieren decides to animate the next season as two movies (because money). In the end, what really bothers me is the extended waiting time.

Still, congrats to Demon Slayer I guess.

Remembering how people griped about how the final arc was split into multiple parts via broadcast.
