A bit disappointing they’re not including Xillia 2. I know a lot of fans regard it as a bit of a black sheep for the series, but I definitely enjoyed my time with it a lot ,ore than the first game.

Also interesting there’s still no news on the next mainline game. There were 5 years between Berseria and Arise, and at this rate it’ll be more than 5 years between Arise and whatever’s next.

I wish they would release the older Tales of games, including the Japanese exclusive titles.

I'm not saying people were wrong for getting their hopes up here, but there was basically no chance of that happening in the modern games industry. Pretty much the only instances of games getting bundled into collections are for significantly older games than Xillia 1 and 2, and they're not going to pass up the opportunity to sell them separately

At this point it's pretty obvious that Bandai Namco will simply remaster all of the 3D/polygonal Tales games (what's left are Symphonia 2, Legendia, Abyss, Innocence, Hearts, Xillia 2, & probably even Zestiria & Berseria) before even thinking about remastering any of the 2D Tales games (Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, Destiny 2, & Rebirth). Hell, they'll probably remaster stuff like Tales of the Tempest, Tales of VS, & Tales of the Heroes before returning to the 2D games.

I dont get their criteria, you'd think they'd start with the older games 1st.
I'd love to see Legendia remastered with voice acting for the character stories outside of the cutscenes...may end up like vesperia with different VAs for the included content though.

Now with the release of Lunar Remasters i only have 3 games left from my PS1 library thats still worth a lot... Tales of destiny 1 and 2 along with thousand arms Razz

Translating games that never came west would require work that I doubt Bandai Namco wants to put into Tales. Are the modern gamers these remasters are aimed at even interested in the 2D Tales games?

"Some expressions have been adjusted from the original work to better reflect present-day standards"

f people really want to play them they can play them via fan translations and emulation without having to deal with the de-master experience.

I did not like Arise very much. If they ever do make a new Tales game I hope it's a return to form and is more like the older Tales games.

40 dollars seems a bit steep for a 15 year old game. If it included the sequel I think that would be fine but I have the originals so maybe for new players it would be worth it if they've never played it. I wonder what all they removed in this version though.

For Playstation, the article itself and the video only specify PS5 so I'm guessing the PS4 in the headline is a typo.

I'd consider buying it if it was on PS4 (since I don't have nor am I about to get a PS5, and I don't have a PS3 for playing the original version either).

Honestly, probably. Remasters and rereleases of older games are doing pretty damn well right now (apparently the Suikoden I+II remasters absolutely blew Konami's expectations out of the water), even with ones that get new translations and translation work, so the idea of Namco Bandai coming around and saying "hey, fans of the Tales series, you know these games that never got released? Well, we're releasing them now!"

They'd probably even be able to get away with not dubbing them. The idea that audiences would look at them and go "ew, 2D" was never really that accurate to begin with and it's incredibly inaccurate now.

They've even got one they can test out, seeing if Tales of Eternia does well, since it has a pretty good translation already (yeah, the dubbing is...a little questionable, but that's not a big deal) and is visually in the same style as the later 2D games. Phantasia would be an easy sell ("hey, remember Symphonia had that prequel on the Gameboy Advance? Here's a much better version of it") and after that, there's only really 3 2D ones left, one of which (Destiny) has name recognition and nostalgia and has the benefit of having an already significantly upgraded version that could be pushed as an all new thing globally. And then if that does well, Destiny 2 is right there and then Rebirth is the only odd one out, might as well throw it in. Innocence is the newest one with no official translation, and even that one's pretty simple since it already got a Vita port that can be worked with.

I don't buy the idea that it's be a big hurdle. I can buy that Namco Bandai might be cheap as hell and not bother, but I don't think the idea that 2D games don't sell is really a thing anymore. This is a company that's been gradually moving towards bringing over the Super Robot Wars series properly for ages until officially formally releasing one globally, apparently to quite a bit of success, after all.

I think, on some level, the order they've been releasing the remasters in is basically just a function of difficulty. Symphonia? It'd already been reworked to be ported to the PS3 and then it's pretty easy to update from there because a lot of the work is already done. (Yes, I know ports are harder than that, but once something is ported enough, there's usually tools to streamline the process built in.) Graces F? Same deal. Vesperia was developed for the Xbox 360, which already gives it a better foundation for modern consoles and PCs. Xillia and later are already a bit easier to work with. Abyss and Legendia are, I think, the big tests, because Abyss got a port, but to the 3DS, which is not very helpful for modern HD consoles, and Legendia's never been ported at all and has the problem of only half of the game being voiced. If those get announced, they're definitely seriously looking at the older games too.

But translating the game into more languages than the original release had instead of just releasing the plain English/Japanese support and call it a day is something that Bamco actually do somehow - so localization issues is not the real point of why they not go to remaster older titles.

The amount of workload for the possible outcome just is, especially considering that even the old 2D assets need to be completely updated to be look nicely at the modern resolution screens beyond just the lazy "press AI button for blurry artifacted upscale" - because for real, most of the 2D Tales games were stopped at time of Playstation/PSP era, with the resolution of the screen been 240-272p at most, far away from the modern time.

Meanwhile Xillia make it just way easier way, because it was PS3 era game - which barely need much uplifting in terms of resources that go beyond remaster to the remake level job - while it was also jailed at PS3 which means it's already closed any possible way to buy it directly from the publisher long time ago (unlike Zestiria and Berseria, which had the PC ports and still available for sale), so Bamco literally couldn't make any money from it anymore - and Bamco sure love more money.

Fairly sure the Symphonia remaster newly translated the game to Korean, Chinese, and even Russian.

Honestly despite Xillia being my favorite Tales game, I'm not sure if I'm going to be getting this. I still have the original version and a PS3 that works so I can just play that. If it included Xillia 2 with the feature of allowing you to unlock Ludger's voice acting on a first playthrough, I'd definitely buy it, but just solo Xillia not sure. It depends on what some of the upgrades are, I'd maybe consider it if they had a JP voice option since I've only played it in English. As for other tales games to remaster. I'd love Abyss or some of the 2d ones like Phantasia and Rebirth to get one, but who knows if that'll ever happen.

Have the original still for my PS3 but never got around to playing it. Am glad to have this on current gen systems and will pick it up. Still haven't gotten to Berseria or Arise yet, so this will slot in nicely as my next Tales title. Hopefully Xillia 2 is the next remaster.

2D games don't need any work at all to look good on modern displays. Spritework is eternal and stuff like Tales of Eternia look amazing when emulated on my computer. Any kind of filters or messing they'd add would only devalue that work. Star Ocean The Second Story R added one of the most disgusting filters imaginable to the entire game that bathed everything in a yellow tint that I had to immediately remove with a mod.

3D games seem like they require a lot more work and often times they mess it up like in Final Fantasy's case with the modern ports messing with the facial models of the characters in games like X.

I streamed both games recently, I suppose I could play them again.
