I've noticed in a few anime's (Can't remember all of them but the recent ones I've seen are "School Days" and "Seto no Hanayome") when someone does a thumbs up their thumb has a spiral on it.
I was wondering what's the meaning of them, do they even have meanings or are they simply to indicate thumbprints?

Spirals are used as fingerprints in many different anime I've seen, not just on thumbs either.

I've always thought that it was just a form of super deformity. Most of the time when I observed such a spiral, the thumb is usually enlarged to a size that is greater than what is normal. The facial expression of the character is often changed to recall some sort of super deformity. It seemed like one way of showing light-heartedness in the scene.
