I can’t believe it took this long to dethrone Pokemon. Shows what a powerhouse the anime was in the 90s.

Again, makes you wonder what went wrong with the domestic totals of at least Code White and Suzume. The former should have done $20 million here. Anyway, I wonder if Demon Slayer will beat Pokemon's total, too. (Unadjusted for inflation.)

Exposure. Spy X Family didn’t hit Netflix and Hulu till after Code White. Demon Slayer hit before and routinely clobbers a lot of Netflix originals. |

To any person that thinks it is more popular to beat it in the box office you need to remember that Pokemon the 1st movie came out in November 1999 (in the USA) so with inflation it made $60,354,974.74.
I have always found that showing box office with revenue is a bad in the long term, and think it should be based on the number of tickets sold. |

Per Deadline, Infinity Castle will make $70+ million overall in its opening weekend, so it has officially beaten Pokemon:The First Movie’s opening weekend gross adjusted for inflation too.

Unfortunately, that will never happen because it’s the studios primarily keeping track of these numbers and revenue is very much preferable to them. We don’t even know the exact numbers for K-Pop Demon Hunters’ fantastic 2-day screenings because Netflix doesn’t even bother reporting revenue numbers so we’re just stuck with some vague estimate. Also, even the reported revenue numbers start getting spotty when you only go back to the just the 90s, and I’ve noticed that lately the last couple years have gotten a bit sloppy with less concrete revenue numbers for some movies too, mainly from the tail end of their theatrical runs. Edit: An additional thing, these “domestic” grosses include all of the revenue from Canada as well. That makes even grosses from back to back weeks impossible to genuinely compare ticket sales because of fluctuating exchange rates. It helps that this had a wider release than most anime movie releases. Didn't have to drive 40 miles for this movie, just 3 miles.

Ticket sales aren't calculated in the US is in purpose because they don't want to reveal the information to harm hollywood.
However in terms of ticket sales in Japan all over the world. It overtook mugen train by a large margin (In Japan it's only going to be second to Mugen train currently with a good chance of overtaking it). So its objectively a bigger success. Demon slayer gave us the first 400 million anime movie, and 500 million. And now is about to give us our first 600 million and maybe 700 million anime movie. There's no anime or manga IP that can match Kimetsu no Yaiba. I think It can give us 1 billion for its final film, assuming it gets China release like other anime and currency exchange rate in Japan improves. |

Not to mention that it was heavily promoted. I don't recall an anime film that got promoted this much before its release. I wasn't even able to see the dub this weekend because it was all but sold out when I went to buy tickets. The only thing available was a few tickets in the front row and a couple of seats by the handicap section. In comparison when I went to see the My Hero movie there were only 3 other people in the theater with me. |

It's not that complicated: it's arguably the best-looking and best-animated shonen action series ever, has a colorful and visually distinctive cast, uses a simple and easy-to-follow plot, and features a lot of dramatic, spectacular battle sequences. Yeah, it's got plenty of weaknesses, too, but it looks too good for those to weight it down much. And don't forget that it has Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" incarnation for the boss villain. Can't go wrong there. . . |

In my brain, anime is still the thing you find hidden down on the lowest shelf at the back of the video store only ever getting grabbed by the biggest nerds. It's just one more reminder of how completely detached I am from this bizarre future I find myself in.
