A lot of people initially slept on Vigilante, for the same assumptions you listed. I’m glad the anime is gradually getting people into peak.

It's understandable, because to be frank, most shonen manga spinoffs are, um, bad. They mostly come off as quick cash-grabs because that's what most of them are. And it doesn't help that MHA has several of them, so Vigilantes got lost in the crowd for a while.
But Vigalantes really turned out to be something special, and there's a real argument to be made that it surpassed its inspiration by the end. And you know, if any series was going to redeem the concept of shonen spinoffs, it makes sense that it would be one inspired by American superhero comics, where shared universes and spinoffs are an essential part of the genre.

I wasn't sure about the Vigilantes series at first, but after a few episodes I was hooked. I think I like season 1 more than any single season of main MHA.
In particular, Vigilantes is frequently funny which is not something I can say for the main series.

I love Koichi, I think it's one of my favorite protagonists ever. He's just a dude maybe a little weird but also he's one of the purest paragons of goodness I have ever seen that doesn't feel ridiculous.
Also going from the Hauler to the Skycrawler has been one of the more satisfying final chapters I will ever read. Let's destroy Wall Street! LMAO.

MHA and Vigilante's are both great takes on the Superhero genre with Japanese sensibilities. Vigilante's is definitely more smaller-scale and personal focused, but it's all the better for it and I can't wait for season 2!
KoichixPop for the win.
