Yeah, I'm not in the mood for a "chick pretending to be a dude" premise this winter so y'all have to populate this thread without me.

In a time and place far removed from ours here, I once read and liked the source manga for this. From what I recall the plot summary above is more or less exhaustive and there are few surprises, but the execution was good and I read it to the end. I think it sort of fizzled out towards the end, but still feeling positive about this adaptation.

Well I would hope the doctor would figure things out, or else he doesn't have a much of a future in the medical field. Also what does being gay have to do with it, gay or straight, a doctor should be able to figure things like this out.

1/2:
Viewers who are pining for an anime that feels like it came out of different time period will get exactly what they want. The trope of a girl going to a boy's school while masquarading as a boy and the expected gags and misunderstandings are all present. Since I have seen a few too many of those in the past it is not something I am interested in right now but maybe sometime in the future. |

I was going to say that the concept feels a bit outdated, before seeing the comments here, and then looking up that the manga ran from 1996 to 2004. That is pretty old, and practically a different era into regards of things like gender. Kind of a bit back to the time of the 2006 movie, She's the Man. And more recently was Vampire Dormitory, which did its thing in being totally ridiculous.

It does feel outdated. Interesting though.
I know this show takes some liberties with reality for the sake of wish fulfilment, but it did strike me as odd how she could enter a boys school. Maybe it's not prohibited but only frowned upon? And the doctor being 100% sure what her gender is, IS weird. He only needs to examine her neurologically, he doesn't need to check boobs or reproductive organs. That would be sexual assault. He probably just thought 'she looks/behaves too girly' and presented his assumption as a fact. Also weird how main girl managed to convince her parents to live in Japan at an all boys school. I doubt we'll see how she did it but I am curious, because the real reason 'kyaa he's hot so I wanna stalk him!!' wouldn't convince any parent. |

I know this series came first, but the main character design, she looks a lot like the main girl from Blue Box, I wonder if this series influenced Blue Box when it comes to character design.

I thought Dr. Umeda told Ashiya that he was gay so as to let her know that feminine charm would not work on him.
Guessing you are not old enough to remember 1974 if you feel this is outdated. These issues were only discussed in medical journals and never mentioned elsewhere unless you were part of a radical counter-culture movement in NYC or SF (back then you could still be arrested for what laws called "deviant" behavior) and police vice squad raids on "underground" gay bars were the norm. When we children were informed that an uncle was homosexual, we knew without being told that it was never to be mentioned again, particularly outside the family. |

My point about outdated is that in a lot of modern circles gender is less binary than it was over 20 years ago. While not super common, we are seeing trans folk in anime, and we have had fairly recent series like Senpai is an Otokonoko. I don't think that someone of the female sex presenting as a boy is as shocking as it used to be. |

Thanks for the explanation - makes sense.
Of course in the theater, "trouser roles" where woman play boys go back to the middle ages, and in anime most prepubescent boys are voiced by female seiyuu. |

It is kind of a scummy the main character is doing when you think about it. We already have one character questioning his sexuality that is messed up enough. And this episode another person almost became a women beater without knowing it. Her little game is not being fair to other people.

Episode 6
I think that I am losing track of who knows that she is a girl, who think she is just a gay twink. She is now talking pretty openly about man crushes with a guy that is probably not fooling anyone. Also, a bit odd that she would have to wear a dress to meet her brother. He called her a tomboy despite her feminine clothes, and complained. Does the guy have some sort of weird standards of if she is a tomboy that she has to be a certain level of feminine. |
