Pretty fair assessment. I generally have liked the series enough to keep watching, but this season was painfully slow. Based on the setting, going into it everyone seemed to expect that moment from the manga, only to not get there somehow. The general anticipation around any given season seems to be centered around certain that moments from the manga. With a schtick that thin, not even getting there had me wondering if it was time to drop it.

Sad thing is, we apparently got another season of this rubbish coming very soon.

I've been reading the manga which became one of my favorites after the first couple of volumes because I thought this series had great potential for character building. After reading volume 35 which recently released, I had become extremely frustrated with the deconstruction of Kazuya's character this late into the story so I did something I have never done before. I looked ahead at the Japanese version which has already reached to volume 44. An event takes place in chapter 380 which is absolutely devastating to the readers and I don't want to include any spoilers so you will need to look it up if you want to know.

Season 4 of the anime ends on chapter 214. I believe this was done to make season 5 worth watching (and I won't ruin it for anyone by stating why). After season 5, the anime series is going to take a dive and they may not even have any intention of making a season 6.

I noticed there's no mention of the shy girl in this review, I assume that's a reflection on how much she brings to the table? Seriously is there any point of that character??

I looked it up and unless I got the wrong chapter I don't get what's devastating? spoiler[Chizuru turned him down? That's good, because he sucks and she deserves better.]

I think it's telling that this season was mainly advertised on the basis of the female cast being in swimsuits for the most of the episode.

I definitely think the prevailing assumption that the quality/story goes downhill past the season 3 plot has proven true even in anime form.

I can see Chizuru's conflict but I think she's still sometimes too hard on Kazuya and treats him too much like a client after everything they've been through together. Of course her being wishy-washy/inconsistent towards him is part of the point.

Also the way the guys so heavily objectified the girls in their swimsuits...like, it's one thing to have all those rando's Reiji always has comment on how attractive the female cast is, it's another thing for the male cast to leer at and oggle them like perverts when they're all supposed to be there and have fun together. Like, you can appreciate the female form, but that's a bit much.

I'm surprised the review brought up Laura Stahl as Mami and not the fact that the two leads' English VA's were recast. Like, when does that happen?

Probably because Sumi is like the most legit/likeable of all the love interests and as such would overshadow everybody and be a better choice for Kazuya were she more prominent.

spoiler[she doesn't even really fully reject him, she makes it indirectly clear she likes him and just says she's got other things going on

frankly she's wasting our time just as much as kazuya is at this point]

That is pretty much how the reviewers felt that are keeping up with the weekly chapter releases.

The devastation for the readers is that in chapter 239 Chizuru states spoiler[she needs to figure things out]. Then 141 chapters later...no real progress and Kazuya being more pathetic than when the story started.

Oh ok yeah. That's a whole lot of chapters to 'figure things out'. Yikes.

I watched the season where she was introduced and her entire deal was just "Shy". Unless she has some insane character development I doubt she would be the best in my eyes. My fave is Mami because she's the only one who treats Kazuya like the trash he is

I can't even imagine how much worse the manga is considering each episode feels glacially slow adapting multiple chapters.

She didn't even show up, she had a 10 second cameo in one episode but she had more screen time in the opening. Hell, Yaemori barely showed up too, what was even the point of introducing her?

i would not go that far. is he immature? yes! but he is definitely not trash. that honor goes to makoto ito and him alone as a male lead character.

and while the characters themselves are all bad personality wise, at least the manga author did not made our lead characters into unforgivable teritory ala domestic girlfriend, scums wish and ESPECIALLY netsuzo trap which are TEN TIMES WORSE than rent a girlfriend!

I've only seen Scum out of those and that's such a different genre it's not even comparable

Even the clip videos from Crunchyroll devolved into openly mocking the show at points. That is never a good sign.
