I’ve seen people say Rogue Orbit doesn’t “look” like Gundam, and while I do feel it seems pretty generically apolitical from the premise, aesthetically it’s very much “weird UC”. Or that’s what I call it anyway. The era F91 is halfway in and Gaia Gear/Victory fully embrace, with robots that push the idea of what a mobile suit should look like and tons of absolutely absurd mobile armors fated to never be made in Gunpla. I’d say it’s pretty inspired in that regard.

I also can’t say Gundam is that “political” in general these days sadly. Hathaway is the most political thing you’ve ever seen but we’re adapting a story from the early 90s that just so happens to focus on issues that are more relevant today than ever. G-Quuuuux genuinely felt like it had very little to say, politically and thematically. And character wise. I’ve not heard good things about G-Witch’s commentary on corporations and arms manufacturers going anywhere interesting, but I have not seen it so I could always think different. So… I guess I just sadly kinda expect it now.

I have had "Manalan mailla" from the Control: Resonant trailer stuck in my head on loop since SGF and might have lost track of other announcements. (The real Hiss is Finnish ethnopop, I swear.)

Quote:
And they've granted us Touhou Koumakyou - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil New Classic.
I didn't stop to watch the full direct, just the trailers that made it into my feed, so I missed this one. Holy crap. Even Touhou is getting remakes now. Kind of excited that ZUN is at the wheel, though. The retouched art is looking good, and the songs they've chosen to preview sound great. ESD's soundtrack is legendary, but more for the melodies than the original arrangements, which even back then sounded like ZUN was still breaking in the new MIDI keyboard. And another September release?

Quote:
But even if it's a reskinned Dark Souls, Echoes of Aincrad might actually get me to play a Sword Art Online game.
This is kind of where I landed. It seems like they made an SAO game for non-SAO fans, and I'll admit I'm curious. (Also curious if the move will pay off, since there seems to be a lot of negativity from the regular SAO fanbase over that. But there seems to be a lot of negativity over SAO games in general so it might just be a day that ends in "-y.")

But yeah, between all the new announcements and the stuff we already knew about like Silent Hill Townfall, September and October are suddenly looking crowded. Those MC designs (especially Cai) might even have me checking out a new Fire Emblem for the first time in forever. We'll see if I have room on my plate, though. I might just stockpile a bunch for the next dry season.

I play RPGs and dabble in fighting games, so I ended up with a fair amount of stuff to look forward to. Especially from the Nintendo Direct.

VF Crossroads looks good- and really, giving VF a strong single player experience is likely to be the missing ingredient. What draws people to specific fighting games is often the characters, and the VF roster has always been pretty plain when compared to its contemporaries. But give me a single player experience to know and get attached to these meatheads? Yeah, I can see that being a good hook for me. "Come for the singleplayer, stay for the fighting game" or something.

SF6's new characters are...interesting. 1 guest, 2 new and...however you classify Bosch, I guess. Its...a bit odd, and I've seen some complaints about it online (Though, there will always be complaints online, so eh.) I might've preferred at least 1 returning character...but I also don't really play SF6, so ignore me on it.

FF7's conclusion is probably going to make or break my opinion on the series as a whole. I've generally appreciated the swings taken and ideas put forth, both for the narrative and gameplay, but never really felt like it quite hit home. Hopefully, this wraps it up well...but conclusions are often the hardest part of a story, so we shall see.

Persona...Yeah, I dunno either. I want to like these, but I think I might have aged out. I'm tired of school, boss. P4 is my least favorite of the "modern" Persona games though, so maybe I'll feel different as more is released for 6.

Fortune's Weave looks pretty good, though I do have concerns. The route split in 3H made the first half of the game pretty repetitive on replays, just as an example. That said, I've typically had a good time with even the more mediocre FEs, so I expect that will be the case here...when I finally break down to get a switch 2.

Of all the Vanillaware catalog, Muramasa is one that I have little interest in. But, having any of them come to PC is potentially a good sign.

Xenoblade is Xenoblade. At this point, there are relatively few devs that I'm as blindly confident about. To be quite frank, I didn't really need a trailer to be completely on board. The trailer did look very good though. However...the same "when I get a switch 2" caveat applies. I think I need one more game to push me into it.

FF Resonance! Turn based FF! Repurposed gacha game! HD-2D Graphics! Yeah, these are all things I'm in favor of. I'm looking forward to it.

KH lost me with 3's original release, but I hope it works out for folks. And I'm not familiar with Tales of Eternia, though I do like the series, so I'm inclined to give that a shot.

Echoes of Aincrad is something I'm...not expecting much out of. Too many SAO games failing to live up to even lowered expectations. It does look like they're putting more elbow grease into this one- maybe the generically named Game Studio Inc, can do what Aquria kept dropping the ball on.

In the wake of the recent announcements and whatever, a post was made on Bluesky about how certain types of AI usage can be read as being done simply to placate a boss, but the devs can't say that out loud. I'm sure there are situations where that's true, but that doesn't make it okay. Even under the best of intentions, 1) you're now an AI company, not a game company; 2) there's no reason to believe it won't happen again; [ REMOVED ] The hows and whys behind the act are much less significant compared to the implications of the act itself.

Apparently, there is now an interview with RGG saying that both the estate and family of Tupac okayed this. It still seems weird to me. I have to wonder how much thought was put into this from RGG in terms of how the general audience would react. I'd like to think they wouldn't have bothered at all if Tupac is going to be some fleeting character, but I'm not convinced this wasn't some idea meant to wow people by its mere existence, and that the reaction isn't at all what RGG anticipated.

Personally, my opinion is the same as with things like Disney using CGI for deceased Star Wars actors. People pass away. For the majority of the time, that meant new actors or maybe not using a character. The audience did, and still can, accept that. Just because the technology exists to do it doesn't mean there is a need. Here, there is probably even less of a need since this is a new character that someone at RGG decided needed to look like a deceased person.

I definitely understand the feeling regarding Persona. P4R would have been a slam dunk for me, but the insistence from someone at Sega or whoever is calling the shots on it to replace the entire cast really sours me on it. The actors are available and want to do it. The customers who played the prior versions want it. There isn't a good reason not to score some easy points.
And the P6 reveal does nothing for me. It doesn't show anything substantial, and felt more like something done just to get people off Atlus' back about it. Considering the length of time since P5 first came out, and the various spinoff titles, cross-overs etc. it gives off the impression that Atlus isn't in much of a hurry, and it's hard to get too excited about something that doesn't seem to be much of a priority for the company making it.

I always wondered if they will accurately portray Cid in the remake trilogy due to the insane amount of swearing even to his wife. Another reason why I can't see Jecht again properly since in X it is revealed several parts that he was an alcoholic and even abused his 7 year old son.

Kingdom Hearts IV feels like a nice revival after so many years but Nintendo isn't even confident in regards to its release year.

Still, it has also been several years since the last Devil May Cry...

I saw that interview, but to be honest it comes off like a hand wringing "Well, we're sorry you feel that way" apology and, as detailed, considering the state of Tupac's estate I question the whole situation. Also, like MarzGurl brought up, it's quite hypocritical for them to fire Pierre Taki for using coke but then have Snoop Dogg who's the patron saint of stoners (god of stoners is Willie Nelson).

Anyway, to the roundup:

-SGF: Virtua Fighter looks neat, even if Sega is losing its mind on other games right now. Crazy Taxi alone deserves them a pillorying, not to mention some in the gaming press saying "But I'll still play it.." (LOOKING AT YOU, JEFF GRUBB). I would be more excited for CAPCOM...if they weren't all key card junk thus they are relegated to "deep digital discount." It's why I find going "all-in" on the Switch 2 to be a bit contentious. They are present, but feels like they more want the money instead of actually treating its audience like, well, an audience.

To be honest, the highlight was for me Castlevania because it not only looks good, it also has some pretty interesting cuts from the series, like Isaac from Curse of Darkness looking extra messed up. A neat little detail is how over on the Japanese website the voice actors listed are all from the Netflix series Japanese dub like Mie Sonozaki and Naoya Uchida (except for Isaac who has Moriya Endo reprising from Curse of Darkness). An interesting wrinkle is The Fallen who's voiced by Nobutoshi Canna who also voiced Leon in Lament of Innocence. So...hmmm. In the meantime, we can also enjoy Rose showing her wardrobe inspired by Mom, Dad, and Vampire Dad

-Nintendo Direct: The one presentation I don't have to just use Wario64 to keep track of

-Fortune's Weave: Some details people have noticed is that "free time" seems to be based on turns in battle rather than generic "here's a point, do whatever," probably to keep people from grinding forever and throwing the balance out of whack. They've also revealed, according to the official website, that there are dungeons in it.

Also, since I'm a stickler for details, while the year listed should be three hundred years after Three Houses...the months they use for the calendar are different, hinting they're just using a different system. Plus there's how the whole setting just looks more ancient, more Mediterranean antiquity than Three Houses' Early Modern Period. There is so much contradictory in this it's fascinating to analyze.

Probably going to go for Theodora first playthrough since she's voiced by Minami Takayama.

-Muramasa: Ah, all we need now is Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown and we have every Vanillaware games on the Switch family. Neat they also seem to have expanded gameplay customization and included English voiceover. Also: Switch 2 version is on a proper cart. Marvelous stays winning!

-Xenoblade: I find it embarrassing how Sega is like "but the original actors are SOOOOOO OOOOOOOLD!" and Xenoblade is like "We got Jenna Coleman back for new lines in a cart racing minigame on top of silly Heart to Hearts where she says 'Splish-splash, flip-flap?' Open the damn checkbook." Genesis looks intriguing and some people noticed a little blip on the bottom of the trailer that has a file path reading "Legacy" meaning this was the new game Monolith teased years back. It looks more fantasy oriented, but this is Monolith Soft who always throw sliding curve balls. One of the artists they picked after all specializes in mechanical design which kind of gives some hints. I fully expect the cast from X to show up in the second act to really mess with things.

-KH: The only reason the AI-assisted cover isn't the most embarrassing thing to come out of the current summer news barrage is because of Tupac digital necromancy

-OoT: Announces remake, doesn't elaborate. That is what we call a mic drop.

Anyway, now just to wait for when FromSoft dates the Dusk Bloods network test

I think my biggest letdown from these shows was the beginning of the Monster Hunter Wilds DLC trailer where, for a split second, I thought it was DMC. And what we end up with is a Switch 2 port of DMC5 instead.

5 ended in a way that seemed to both conclude the overall narrative of the series and set up a new status quo for sequels. As time has passed, I've come to think that Capcom ended Devil May Cry internally and doesn't want to come out and say it.

Abused or neglected? Haven’t played 10 in years but I don’t recall the abuse stuff.

Considering how meh the last game not helped by how it felt like it was copying Devil May Cry 3 I’m one of the few not bothered by this.

I think a vocal minority has led too many of us to assume everything is overly censored now.

Kaine swears a ton in Nier and that wasn’t an issue. If anything they’ll just soften the language a tiny bit.

I never got the impression we were meant to fully empathize with Jecht. He was a flawed character with good intentions who hurt and helped people. He’s honestly one of the most realistic depictions of a toxic sports dad I’ve seen.

What? In almost every scene he first appears in, Cid swears towards his wife. Same with a flashback from Tidus's childhood where the kid hates that the entire city of Zanarkand makes fun of Zecht for being an alcoholic but the grown man takes his anger on the kid.

There were so many news and I have already talked about some games in other posts, but I'll try to expand on some specific ones.
- Street Fighter 6: I also thought the Tifa leaks were fake, I was actually hoping they were mistaken her with Tiffany Lords from Rival Schools, but I'm mostly okay with her inclusion. I can see why Tifa was considered a hot commodity, though I'm reminded when Cloud was added as a playable character in Smash Bros. 4, I know that most people back then thought his inclusion was pretty shocking considering his game of origin is (in)famous for being the one that cemented Squaresoft's abandonment of Nintendo in favor of Sony, but the thing is that Tetsuya Nomura was more confused than anything when Sakurai asked for his inclusion, Nomura basically told Sakurai, "You sure you want to add Cloud? He's from an old game?", so maybe the idea of a Remake was fully realized back then. Tifa's inclusion in SF6 does feel a lot more like a cross promotion for the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project, and as I said elsewhere, I don't know if there's a huge overlap between Final Fantasy (VII) and Street Fighter fans, except for Maximillian Dood, I think I can understand why many wanted her to appear in Tekken, since both Final Fantasy and Tekken exploded in popularity on the PlaySatation in the mid to late '90s;
- FFVII Revelation: I'm still quite surprised how Square-Enix's platform choices for this project changed in such a relatively short time, both Remake and Rebirth were PS exclusives (PC ports notwithstanding), but now they're focused on a multiplatform strategy, due to the fact that Rebirth's sales were apparently not that impressive (that's kind of issue among fans of this project), but I'm still not quite sure how successful this project will be in the long term, even if Revelations turns out to be a huge critical hit;
- RE Veronica: well, it finally happened, the game the fanbase wanted a remake the most. But I think that at this point most RE fans actually want to see Capcom making a Dino Crisis remake;
- Kingdom Hearts: perhaps the most surprising revel at the Direct, because I don't think most people associate the KH with Nintendo consoles, aside from some weird spin-off games, despite the fact that I always felt that a game series filled with Disney chatacters was a right fit on Nintendo. In a way it kind of feels like a late response to Sora's inclusion on Smash Ultimate, don't think too many players played the cloud versions of KH I, II and III on the original Switch, but as I mentioned above, Square-Enix is trying to build an audience outside the PS for major IPs and Kingdom Hearts lacked a true major presence on Nintendo consoles, better late than never, don't know if this kind of guarantees that Sora could come back for a new Smash Bros. game;
- Ocarina of Time: I recently saw a list of the best performing games that were shown in the SGF and recent similar events and the Ocarina of Time remake is just behind God of War Laufey in second place, it's pretty obvious that Nintendo didn't have to show too much, the original Ocarina of Time is in the same park as other games from the late '90s that were hugely popular and people wanted to see it being remade in the same vein as the Final Fantasy VII Project and Capcom's RE 2 and 3 remakes. Not to mention that after the Star Fox 64 remake annoucement, I can imagine Nintendo trying to remake some of its most iconic games, in a more "modern" way, more similar to those other games I mentioned, being remade in a way that would not have been that spectacular on the original Switch.

Quoted the wrong part of my comments I said nothing about Cid as I’ve never played the full version of Final Fantasy 7.

While there has been a number of different takes regarding Rebirth’s sales on the PS5 most common explanation is the fact many people didn’t have a PS5 as they did PS4’s when Remake launched for that system hence them scuttling that PlayStation exclusivity.

They do?

Pretty sure they’ve been beying at the moon for a remake of Outbreak even with the fact that multiplayer Resident Evil’s have been…..messy.

It's not really hand wringing so much as they're just telling people how it is. Like the devs say bringing back deceased actors is common in Japan so there's no issue for them and they're going to do it regardless what a vocal minority of westerners think since they have permission from Tupac's family and everything. "We're sorry you feel that way" is about all they can say because the problem lies wholly with the minority of fans complaining.

Just give it a few weeks and Gamers will move on to the next thing to be outraged over once their grifters give them their new marching orders while the rest of us actually play and enjoy these games.

chrisb wrote:

I think the FF7 remake itself is why people assume that. If Tseng or Cloud can't slap Aerith around then what hope does Cid and his abusive antics have? He can't even smoke anymore. The characters in the remake are not the original characters. That's fine, I guess. It's its own thing. But we should be able to at least acknowledge that. Maybe they could have kept all that if Square-Enix wanted to give the game an M rating but they didn't want to.

Honestly I wouldn't mind if Xenoblade got a re-dub. The British dub being a holdover from when the NoE was the only one willing to localize the game has kind of been a detriment to now all the mainline game dubs apparently have to have British voices. I play with Japanese voices but it's still annoying when the subs showcase it. At least X didn't have a British dub and had mostly normal actors and script writing.

I do find it kind of funny Erin Fitzgerald isn't even the original English Chie voice actress so her emotional post comes off a bit hypocritical given she took the role from the original Chie voice actress herself. That being said it was in poor taste for one of the new VAs to quote her post and try to educate her though.
