Actually Adult Swim does get a piece of the Boondocks and Home Movies revenue because they played a big role in financing them. They're not their assets, no, but because those shows couldn't go on without the backing of the network, Sony/Soup2Nuts gives AS a portion of the proceeds made from licensing. They've also secured perpetual broadcasting rights to both shows, unlike anime, which they basically rent and then have to pay to renew every couple years. AS does actively work with their distributors, but only the ones that seem to express interest in cooperating, which are basically FUNimation and Viz Media. It seems the others just want the check from the network. |

Wait a second ... this was supposed to be done secretly? I knew it was just a coincidence two pro-anime posts ended up in the most annoying letter contest final round. |

Yeah, it's going to be a bummer that there won't be any anime on G4TechTV Canada for now, unless they decide to air Daphne. They presumably still have it, so why not air it? With no new anime on G4TechTV or Razer, Superchannel being unobtainable for me at the moment, IFC airing old Manga Entertainment TV series (which I'm still watching), and YTV seemingly not getting anything new for April (leaving only Naruto and Death Note in terms of anime premieres on the station), it looks like Canadians have finally hit a rut in terms of new anime, after hitting a peak in new titles during the past 12-18 months. It'll be interesting to see what will happen from here on out. BTW Brian, you can get the episode titles for Kyo Kara Maoh! off of Geneon's official website. |

I'd also say that Adult Swim isn't a "low rated" network. It constantly is either number one or two with 18-34 year olds each week. In fact, their average went up once they replaced anime on weekdays with comedy shows.

Thank you for the open letter. You were able to coalesce my thoughts on the Adult Swim/Anime situation. Too bad it will probably be ignored like they have in the past.

Isn't Shin Chan still in 'premieres' on Razer or is it repeating already? |

Adult swim used to be what i watched my anime on. They always had somethin good...and still do like Bleach and Deathnote...but it seems anime is circling the drain with adult swim now. Which sucks but 99% of the anime i watch is online now so i guess its not a big deal. Still i imagine they will lose alot of fans if they get rid of anime...

I'm still curious as to where this whole recent idea of anime "going down the tubes" on [as] has come from, when they have one brand-spanking-new series ready to premiere in two weeks and are carrying on with two very popular titles (and that's without counting the new Shin-chan premieres). Yes, they dropped anime from the weekday lineup, but from someone who's been a rabid [as] addict for a good three years now, I'm somewhat relieved that they did. The series that were previously on weekdays were (largely) being sorely overrun, and with recent license expirations, there wasn't a whole lot to replace them. Not having anything on on weekday nights is a bit of a nice break from feeling obligated to re-watch series I've already seen seven or eight times straight through on the lineup. The current line of thinking seems to be that weekday anime will most likely return in some form over the next few months, when both Death Note and Blood+ will be ripe for repeat runs.

I know, I thought about trying to see who here had this channel and begging for any sort of copy of those last episodes un-released on disk as well. I hate that I have no other way of seeing all of this, I can't believe its done and will never be released, that boggles my mind. I guess maybe I could search youtube eventually, but that seems like a poor choice. Oh well. |

While the overplays got bad (never to Starz levels though,) the weeknight showings did help for missed episodes. They even pulled the Thursday night encores, a bastion of hope for anybody who missed the two "Saturday" screenings (that would include almost anyone encountering a problem timeshifting.) |

Well, one of the big problems was already mentioned: lack of promotion. I rarely know what anime they're showing if they even bother to show it. I mean, I watch Death Note, but it's kind of buried and I wouldn't know they had it if I wasn't already watching it.
This also feeds into other problems. First, they rarely have new product these days. Other than Bleach (don't watch it, not sure what's going on with it) and Death Note they don't seem to be airing anything new. They aren't even airing older shows that they previously aired very often. I can't recall the last time they were showing Trigun or their brief run of Evangelion. I mean, anything is better than tons and tons of Inuyasha, but if all they're showing is series that are largely played out there isn't much desire to see them. Finally, they have the problems of dealing with DVDs. If I miss one episode, such as the first one, I'm going to ignore basically the entire run of most anime. Why bother when I could just rent it locally or through NetFlix or GreenCine? Plus, then it won't be edited and I can watch it subbed. What they need to bring anime back is something like Full Metal Alchemist when they were running new episodes of the show before they were released on DVD with a mid-week re-run in case you missed it the first time. Combine this with promotion so I actually know that the show is running and have an idea what it's about and it might help to improve their numbers. Still, unlike the comedy you won't be getting people watching the same shows every single night as you re-run them constantly and if they miss a few of the early episodes it seems likely that they'll wait for DVD or grab them online instead. One suggestion that I know they'd never follow would be to move a bit outside of their block format. Yes, Family Guy is popular, but maybe if you ran your new anime at the top of the block, maybe only on Saturdays even, you'd pull in people who aren't going to stay up until 1 AM every week to watch it. Let people know that you can catch brand-new, not on DVD episodes every Sat. at 11 though and you bring in more viewers. Maybe the time-slot is one of the many reasons why Futurama and Family Guy always brought in such good numbers. Right now it seems like they're more likely to be pulling in their biggest and most dedicated anime fans from people with TiVo (even though I did watch a lot of it live back in college... even if I stay up even later now) who aren't recorded by Neilsen. They don't have to worry about missing episodes or what time they show it (especially when they keep moving things around... because that worked so well for Fox with Futurama and Family Guy). |
