I know this isn't exactly anime-related, but... here goes.
I seem to purchase a lot of defective DVDs. I'm talking 10+ a year. I try the disc in other players, check for damage, clean the disc/player, etc. I just returned a defective copy of Blood: The Last Vampire yesterday (the only copy they had...of course ), and two others right after X-mas.
Is this anywhere near common, or do the home entertainment gods just enjoy pooping on my head?

Well, the Slayers series was totally messed, but that was the reszult of poor production and I think was recalled. I got volume one of Berserk only to find that it was totally screwy, I couldn't watch past the middle of episode two before it started messing up. That's it though, maybe you are unlucky or get a truly immense number of DVDs . Or maybe you need a better player.

I've only really got one defective disc in my anime purchasing lifetime, and that's the first "Cowboy Bebop" DVD. The disc was covered with an ugly mark that prevented it from playing a certain portion of the episodes on the disc. I thankfully quickly got it replaced at the store I bought it from.

Something I failed to mention... I only buy maybe 2-3 DVDs a month. I don't know how that compares to the average fan, but I wouldn't call it immense.
As for my players, I have a Pioneer in the living room, an APEX (cheap) in the bedroom, and my computer. I always try the disc in all three to make sure. If defective, I sometimes get angry and punch a hole in the wall. Then I get frustrated, because now I must putty-up the drywall AND drive back to the store

Back when I had my old DVD player, I used to think that just about every fifth disc I rented was defective. However, I checked a supposedly screwed up Kenshin disc on my parents' player and it worked fine, indicating an issue with my player and not the discs.
I now have a new player, and have experienced no problems.

I've found my player to be very capricious at times. Sometimes it will refuse to play my Maison Ikkoku discs without skipping something awful, but other times it will play the exact same disc just fine. I know it's not the disc's fault because I can always play it just fine on my computer.

I used to think the dvds i got were screwed up( anime dvds or not), but then i punched my dvd player about 5 times pretty hard, and now its works perfectly. I wouldn't reccommend that to fix your or anyones player, but it did fix mine.

Only defective DVD I've ever had was my copy of Endless Waltz, and I'm not 100% sure it was the disc that was screwy because the first time I watched it, I watched it on a first run PS2.
So, there's the chance the PS2 screwed it up for me.

I've only bought one defective DVD, anime or not, ever. It was actually the very first anime DVD I bought, Tenchi Muyo in Love. Froze up a lot and was just generally unpleasant to try to watch with lots of video problems. Swapped it for a new one and never had anymore problems. If you're having that many problems, it's probably your player that's defective, not the discs. Try watching a supposedly defective disc in another DVD player and see if it works.

I have about three of which I received from NewType magazine. One doesn't work and two just flick on and off and play random things. I didn't really want to see them anyway, though.

Just one, Eva: Death and Rebirth. One the other hand, there have been a couple of Live Action DVDs that I had the trade out becasue of either odd marks, like a some odd blue ring, to won't play at all. Most of the time it same day, so the don't ask much questions.

Very few. Probably about three or so.... out of near 200 or so discs I own, that's a proportion I'm willing to live with....
A lot of problems are fixed with a better DVD player...

Actually, my friend bought Yu Yu Hakusho: The Gate of Betrayal, and took it back because the disc skipped in the second episode...THREE TIMES! (It didn't skip three times, he took it back three times.) He bought three different copies of that disc, and each one screwed up at the same part...That's kinda creepy 0_o

Did he try them on different players? Perhaps the player he was using was sensitive to a certain quirk in the disc, but others would play it just fine.

Yep, we tried those discs on three different players (his player, my player, and my PS2). It still didn't work. And it kept screwing up in the same place, too...
He decided to just stop trying, and traded it in for GTO volume 1. (Quite a wise choice )
