So my friend and I were having a talk about anime the other day. He hates the genre because of things like Pokemon and DBZ, and is convinced that there could not possibly be anything else of value because of those animes. I tried and tried to tell him, that there are as many different variaties of anime as there are flavors of cool - aid, and he still would not believe me. My personal reason for loving anime as much as I do, is because there are so many different genres of it out there that there is always at least one type of anime for every type of person. I guess I kind of do not know how to dispell the sterotypes that anime gets. The things like it is just for kids, and that only people who live in caves and never see the light of day are the ones who watch it. That we are all insane fan-boys/girls, and that we have no life. So my question to all of you is, how do all of you quell such stereotypes for this art form? Thanks for anything that anyone says in advance

Ugh...I absolutey hate it when I say I like anime and my "friends" give me this wierd look. I think it has to do with: Where you live, the type of friends you have, and the age. The older they are the less accepting people are, especially when they are the type to follow trends which is where your location comes in. I live where everyone follows each other, seriously, one thing happens and the rest of the school knows and its a big deal, so anime is not accepted period so...no one watches it. They just think they're cartoons...nothing more. And trying to tell them that they aren't is pointless...and most people don't even stay awake long enough to watch them here. Stupid sheep...

My friend thought that Anime was cartoon porn and made silly comments because I enjoyed it so much. I knew he would like Anime because he loves Star Wars and Warhammer, and other Sci fi. So I showed him Ninja Scroll and Evangelion. Needless to say, his opinion has changed to a more positive opinion on Anime.

Show the stereotypers who think kiddy that not all anime is kiddy stuff dubbed on tv, and do this via La Blue Girl.
I've had to force my non-anime fans to watch anime, and I haven't really converted any of them. They just sit through it. >.> Got my mom into a hentai phase after showing her hentai though. Now she accepts that anime is not just for kids, and thinks Ghost in the Shell is the coolest "adult" animated movie ever, excluding her hentai collection.
Pick an anime with his intrest. There are tons of anime out there, and most likely one of them out there is connected to his intrest. Or slowly get him intrested in anime through manga that have anime titles. Maybe he doesn't think all comics are for kids.

Show him Berserk! I don't know many people who wouldn't like blood, swords, and war. Considering he doesn't like all that super-power stuff Berserk would be the best choice to convince your friend into likeing anime. Or you could show him hentai so he could think your a sicko and think that all anime is porn. Which ever one sounds better.

Hey, my mom thought the idea of animated with things that could never happen in real life really funny! I'm not a sicko! Honestly! I just like smutty shoujo manga, and that's my limit. |
I wasn't directing it towards anyone. I'm just saying that people get the wrong idea of anime due to hentai. There are a lot of people in my school who believe that anime and hentai are one in the same. I don't like hentai at all but that's just my opinion. I actually only know of one person in my school who actually likes it, the rest who like anime just think it's disgusting. But honestly, many people due tend to think that anime is all sex due to hentai.

Yeah... which is really sad... just the other day, three of my classmates and I got in a heated discussion about manga (for some unknown reason, lol), and one of my friends that sat next to me was like, "Are you guys talking about porn?" x_x

lol, show him hentai to make him think anime is just for sicko's...that's hilarious. I do however like the idea of showing him Berserk. That anime rocks, hopefully he'll like it. Thanks for your opinions everyone

Generally it's dificult to get a non-otaku to agree to watch an entire 26, or even 13, episode series. That's why you need to start with movies or OVA. Pick Princess Mononoke, Millenium Actress, Akira, FLCL, or whatever else you think your friend will like. PM is a particularly good choice as I've failed to find anyone who does not like that movie after seeing it. You might also try showing him a few sessions of Cowboy Bebop since most episodes are stand alone and don't require the viewer to be familiar with the whole series.

The two anime sterotypes that will never die are how anime is porn and all anime women have huge breasts.

But it is true that most of them do! If nothing else most have larger breats than the typical Japanese girl/woman. And of course because they are bigger they bounce all the time. Sometimes that gives me a headache

It never ceases to amaze me how Americans can go on and on about breasts. So anime breasts are big? So what?
America produced Corben, who was congenitally unable to draw women with breasts smaller than their heads. It also produced a culture of plastic surgery that results in more boob jobs per capita than any other country in the world.
Relax, will you? The Japanese have a long, long way to go before they're as fixated on breasts as the Americans. You're in no danger of losing your "edge".
As for Europeans.... we have our own kinks. But I'll leave that up to others to point fingers at. Hi-mi-tsu, neh?

Oh, by the way: it's "stereotypes".

Just buy four TV's, and blast Hamtaro, Ninja Scroll, FLCL, and La Blue Girl all side by side in a room. Then chain your friend to a chair. Leave for half an hour, then see what happens. =P
In all seriousness, ignore the ignorance of others. If someone hates anime, that's their choice. If you try to violently cram it down their throat, they'll just see you as a fanboy product of the genre they hate. Instead, if you really want them to like it, learn to indirectly hint stuff. There really isn't exactly an anime for everyone. What about those who hate anime?

Steretypes. What would the world be without stereotypes? So what if they think it's porn, or kiddy, or something else. Let them be. Where I come from, the town is fixated on anything with a motor attached. But I just can't get into it. So what if Anime has made me an Evil/Insane person , don't judge me for what I like.
