Episode 12 (finale)

I was expecting more of a reveal of trauma connected to his mum. But it was mostly just that she found out that her father was a crossdresser after we heard her internal dialogue that she thinks AMAB people wearing female clothing is gross and she decided not to see him again after her mother died. I guess it is worth something that she was more accepting of Makoto after they decided to show their true self to her, and said more of having fears they would feel bad about making others uncomfortable. I find it hard to believe there isn't still some issues. Although, I was honestly amused that she owned up to frustration by the fact that she actually has similar tastes to Makoto.

I was also worried coming into the last episode that there would be more drama with Saki, like that there was a good reason her grandmother would be worried about Saki getting attached her mum. But the trip just kind of happened without something like her mother suddenly backing out or revealed as unreliable.

In terms of gender, it kind of feels like it gave a non-answer. Makoto said that they are not choosing to live as a boy or live as a girl, but as themself, which would point towards non-binary. But clarified along the lines that they are a boy but like things girls like, which kind of feels, like maybe being a more Japanese thing. But I don't know, I am mentally comparing it to what I read in the manga Love Me for Who I Am. The manga was around an Otokonoko cafe, and had different characters explored as a crossdressing man, transgender woman, and a non-binary who is neither, all being AMAB people like presenting femininely, and it said what those meant. Looking back at Senpai is an Otokonoko, it feels like it is missing elements of introducing more queer characters that would make Saki, Makoto and Ryuji feel less alone that they are not heteronormative. Makoto met their "grandfather" in the last episode, but kind of doesn't explain anything other that they like cute things too. I was kind of expecting at least something like we would learn the neighbour was a transwoman, so there could be an example if Makoto chose they could effectively pass, and would give more reasoning for her inclusion.

The show did get surprisingly heavy at times, a highlight being Saki where completely outside of her interactions with Makoto had her terrified that she was being stalked, and turned to Ryuji. When he got to the door it looked like he wasted his time by how carefree she looked, until he noticed that she was shaking and was trying to hide how scared she actually was. The following arc showcasing that she acts like she is okay with her dad leaving but is incredibly lonely and feels unloved. It kind of feels unresolved, that she might actually just think she is less worthy of being allowed to love Makoto as she perceives Ryuji's feelings as more special. Her acting like something is broken in her, but that kind of out of steps that the show opened up to her confessing attraction to Makoto, and especially as a good deal of the second half of the show in general was about her insecurities in general.

I can see that there is going to be a movie, so maybe there would be something more.

I will give the show a rating of Very good (8/10). There are thing I do enjoy in anime like this, I just still think there are places that could be improved.
