We might also be jumping the gun under the assumption that AI translation adoption is defaultly geared to Western English audiences.
It could also be aimed at non-English emerging markets. India alone has several state languages and dialects. Having human translations for all of these for weekly manga releases is untenable, not only work-wise, but also because professional translators don't grow on trees, especially for more obscure languages. AI options would allow readers from those places to read manga by selecting a real time setting from a menu for their language of choice, maybe even including translation and cultural notes. |

I'm completely fine with AI translations. I'll take a few stilted or wooden dialog over blatant censorship and Gen Z slang being inserted by people in their 30s desperate to stay cool with the kids. I've always had my gripes with localization since the days of DIC, Nelvana, and 4Kids, but back then it was mostly due to TV broadcast standards and prioritizing making money. It wasn't until the Seven Seas thing when I realized the translation industry was beyond fixing due to the rampant nepotism in it and translators coming out in droves to defend blatant censorship for no reason other than they were friends with the person who did it. Wipe it clean and let's have a clean slate.

Most of the translations certain groups complain about aren’t even bad translations. Certain groups just complain because “woke” or whatever buzzword the outrage farms are using now. Gotta get them clicks. I won’t excuse mistakes, but a lot of the examples of “bad” translations I see thrown around are just people getting themselves worked up because of word choice. Translation is an art. There can be different ways to translate a sentence let alone an entire work. Sometimes legitimate mistakes do happen. I’ll complain about those.
People are in for a bad surprise if they think that AI can do better. It’s incredibly ironic that the same people who want “accurate” translations are for AI translations. That’ll just make them so much worse. AI does not understand nuance among other things. |

Considering some companies have done a U-turn on relying on AI it clearly isn’t the “something better”. I also think you misunderstand no one treats translators as sacred cows the issue here is firing people from jobs which in many cases the human workers are already underpaid as is, but then these same companies turn around to spend large sums of money on machine/ai alternatives that for as much as some want to play it up isn’t as reliable or efficient as humans. On top of the other skeevy practices that companies engage in to either make it easier to fire human employees or drive them to quit. At this current time, AI translations just suck. There's a long, long way to go before they can catch up to humans.
Yeah, there are definitely a lot of what I call "Japanese 101 phrasebook"-type complaints from people who learned a few Japanese words and think they always correspond to certain English words, but there are also complaints about actual mistakes where the translation gets the overall meaning wrong. Unfortunately, there are way too many of the phrasebook-type complaints, that legitimate discussions about translation accuracy often get lost among them. |

Some people in this thread to burn the planet to a crisp with data centers using up all the water and power, make hardware an impossible luxury, and let hundreds of people who are doing a great job lose their just because of a handful of people being cheeky.

Maybe I'll just retire from enjoying entertainment as a whole if everything's just gonna be translated by AI. Not even gonna bother with domestic entertainment or anything I'm just going to get my entertainment fix by sleeping for all of my free time lol. That'd be more enjoyable than dealing with slop.
