I've noticed that some of the funniest things I've seen in anime are in shows that are far from comedies. The most recent example of this is from Ga-Rei: Zero, ep 5 where Kagura decides to play matchmaker with Yomi and Nori. The plan she comes up with is to have Yomi attacked by a disguised member of their team, then have Nori save her and boom! Love. Only problem is that Yomi is far from defenseless, and seeing the members imagine their horrible deaths for threatening Yomi is hilarious
 Another example for me is the Mushroom Samba episode from Cowboy Bebop.
Has anyone else found some of the funniest things they see are in non-comedies? And if so, what's your theory behind that? Quantity goes down, quality goes up? Or simply that the jokes seem funnier because they are few and far between? My personal theory is a bit of both. |

A Mystery

Another: the scene in episode 6 where spoiler[Kouichi and Misaki dance in the class room, I mean, nobody will call them out for it - o wait - it's a daydream!] It's a mystery/thriller series with a dark atmosphere, where even when the characters have fun (like in the spoiler[beach] episode), there's an uneasy atmosphere that something might be happening. The scene was so out of place and outside what the spoiler[characters (especially Misaki) would normally do IRL], including the spoiler[happy music that went along with it...], I thought it was hilarious.
It's true that this moment was in part so funny because there weren't a lot of comedy moments (at least until that point), but it was most of all the stark contrast in atmosphere and the surprise element. |

With serious titles, I usually find myself laughing at unintentionally funny moments where the show is trying to be serious yet due to poor writing, over-the-top acting and/or silly-looking animation, the moments come across more silly than serious for me. This is otherwise known as Narm. Here are some notable examples of anime titles/ moments that had me laughing when they try being serious:
-Aquarion- While I didn't survive past the second episode of the series, Aquarion did have me giggling during the mecha combination scenes as the pilots sounded like they were having some kind of orgasm as their mecha combined. -Dragon Ball Z- The ridiculously-long scenes where the characters are either transforming or powering-up and sound like they are trying to use the bathroom. Another example coming from the original English dub to the anime was Frieza where he sounded like a woman and was seemingly trying to flirt with Goku in a few scenes of their long battle. -Code Geass- The final episodes of the first season and much of the second season have enough moments where it's quite hard to take the show seriously after the point where spoiler[Euphie gets Geassed and goes on her shooting rampage]. From over-the-top acting displayed by characters like Euphie and Nina to some ridiculous looking character facial designs during later moments in R2 to some lapsing moments of logic such as spoiler[Schneizel being duped by the same trick Lelouch used on Mao despite being Lulu's intellectual equal], Code Geass is one of my favorite titles to pick apart because of how unintentionally silly it is. -Death Note- The infamous "potato chip scene" where Light is trying to be menacing as he writes into the Death Note chowing on chips yet the line he delivers makes him sound like a hammy villain. A scene on par with the hammy side of the scene would later come with spoiler[Mikami and his blabbering of "DELETE! DELETE! DELETE!" while writing into his Death Note.] |

That's often the underlying problem with the default attitude behind the whole "Narm" concept: a cynical observer assumes that all anime is intended to be taken completely seriously, from beginning to end, unless they have been explictly labelled as part of the comedy genre. Which means taking for granted that the creators must be either blind or incompetent, but never capable of self-awareness or realizing the very simple fact that they're working on a bunch of cartoons primarily intended to sell discs or merchandise to children and teenagers or, for that matter, otaku.
I'm not suggesting there is nothing unintentional, because that would be equally logically flawed, but it is really too much of a stretch to pretend that nothing is ever meant to be taken purely at face value or just laughed and chuckled at, even during a superficially serious scene, when you've got shows that are as openly over-the-top as Code Geass and Death Note were or, even more so, stuff like Aquarion. If you dig a little bit deeper, you can even find interviews and commentary tracks where the staff shows they are capable of joking about some of the "serious" parts of their work nearly as much as the audience did. |

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Barry the Chopper. Anything, everything involving him. And the only reason a serial killer's so funny here is because he doesn't actually try to kill any innocents.
The Future Diary. The Third gets his diary. He gets his diary again. He gets his diary again again... Actually, most of the Omake bits are funny because they're all part of the real plot/charcter development with no "out of character" comedy segments. I just point out the Third because he's another serial killer and they're not known for comedy. Solty Rei. The OAVs and I only mention them because of the sitcom plot they have compared to the rest of the series. More Three's Company than Blade Runner. Also: "Ohhh, Celica just hit Celica right between the eyes." spoiler[Both characters die in the main series so it's comedy tinged with bitterness at that point. As it is, it's still funny.] And then there's the TV Host interviewing Rose and quickly regretting it. |

My first thought was Aquarion on this subject. Although I do beleive the "ecstacy" moments & others were tongue in cheek, there were numerous times on that show where they tried to protray deep philosophical concepts that often came across as pretentious & hokey - those are the moments that made me LOL, and I am pretty sure they were trying to be serious about that stuff. But even those moments were very silly in this show, so you never could quite tell what they were going for. |

Paprika- the scene when the detective has a conversation with the old scientist in a dream, with the latter looking like a monkey.
I think right before that the film features a scene when the detective, all happy that the case is over, closes down his computer, sights, stretches, and as he turns around, through the window he see a parade of animals and other fantastic creatures dancing outside his window. And from Gungrave- I always found the moment when Brandon met Maria quite funny. He is so clumsy around her, not at all what you'd expect.
I don't think that is always the case. I apreciate and like comic moments in 'serious' anime, and do not expect everything to be super serious- like in life, it is good to have a mixture of both. I thought that the point of this threat was just to point out some scenes/episodes that contrast with each other have a look at some unexpected comic moments rather than to wander that they exist. |

The "bottle" episode of Ergo Proxy, with the three main characters stranded and isolated due to lack of wind. Re-l getting neurotic about the hair Vincent kept missing when shaving, Pino and Vincent trying on Re-l's makeup...

Anything involving Pen-Pen in Neon Genesis Evangelion, especially that scene where he reluctantly dives into his food dish to eat what Misato has prepared for him in the fifth episode where she invited Ritsuko for dinner with her and Shinji, the look on Pen-Pen's face after eating Misato's food was classic, I couldn't stop laughing.
