This contains possible spoilers of both Sora no Woto and K-ON!

Before I start, let me just clarify that both Sora no Woto and K-ON! are among my favorite shows. I am posting this to point out the differences, not to imply that one series is superior to the other. Sora no Woto is often stigmatized as "military K-ON!", so I'd like to point out why I think Sora no Woto is it's own unique show and deserves to be recognized as such, not as a clone that leeches off of K-ON!'s success.

1. Yui and Kanata have a lot in common; they're both klutzy, both initially suck at their instruments, and both have absolute pitch. But Yui has no real goals in her life while Kanata does; Yui has more self-confidence and self-appreciation than Kanata; Yui takes her work less seriously than Kanata and is more of a slacker.

2. The only things Rio and Mio have in common are their hairstyles, and their names sound kind of similar (Rio/Mio). Mio is more sociable (to her friends) and Rio is reserved around almost everyone, except for Filicia and later on Kanata; Mio has very little self-confidence and Rio is probably the most confident character in Sora no Woto; Rio is more mature than Mio.

3. Filicia and Tsumugi have similar temperaments, but I think Filicia temperament is somewhat of a front. She has real demons that haunt her frequently; you get to see her real temperament especially in epiosde 12, and she turns out to be a total badass. Tsumugi is not a leader, but she's the glue that holds the group together. She shows her true colors to the group all the time. Filicia is the leader, and almost never shows her true temperament unless she has to.

4. Kureha looks pretty much like Azusa, but Kureha and very outspoken and Azusa is almost as reserved as Noel. I'd say Kureha has the looks of Azusa with a more similar temperament to Ritsu, but more... annoying than Ritsu. Noel is the quiet, reserved side of Azusa, but don't be fooled; she's not quite as reserved as someone like Rei Ayanami or Yuki Nagato. Noel's personality actually changes very significantly.

5. K-ON! is a show about music. Sora no Woto is not a show about music, it's a show in which music plays an important role, but not the central role. It's on the side. The 1121st Platoon is not a band. Houkago Tea-Time is a band. There is not a single original song in Sora no Woto (not counting OP/ED) and there is no singing. The most important song is a trumpet rendition of Amazing Grace - not an original song. The other trumpet songs are used as signals and methods of communication, not musical expression like in K-ON!.

6. K-ON! is a highschool club anime. I guess the 1121st Platoon is kind of like a club, but being a member of the 1121st Platoon is more of a duty whereas the Houkago Tea Time is a volunteer group. K-ON! puts a huge emphasis on the importance of clubs; from the very beginning, the Light Music club is on the verge of being shut down, so they have to save it and constantly keep it up via communications with the student council president and adviser (Nodoka and Sawako). Sora no Woto is not about clubs, it's about overcoming dark pasts, maintaining peace, living in a community, and making the best out of the worst possible situation (the end of the world). The K-ON! cast have to protect their group, the Sora no Woto cast have to maintain peace in their town.

7. Sora no Woto is the first project of Anime no Chikara, which is basically a project to make original animes which are not based on manga, games, or other media. K-ON! is a manga adaption. Not saying that one is better than the other, but I think it's important to note that the two have different origins.

8. While it never heavily developed, Sora no Woto hints at a very rich mythology and culture. When you first watch the show, you may assume it's set in a faux-European city during World War 2. But the more you watch, the more apparent it becomes that this is not World War 2 Europe. In fact it's very far ahead in the future. My guess is that World War 2 never quite ended; the entirety of the world's manpower went into developing more advanced military weapons. Besides military technology, the rest of technology and culture are not advanced beyond what they were in the 1950s. The only significant culture advancement is a mixture of different cultures in Helvetia. I would estimate that Sora no Woto is set at least 100 years in the future, while still having the aesthetics of the mid-20th century.

Just wondering...

Why do you think people care what you have to say about two random shows?

and

Why are you not posting this in their respective threads?

I haven't seen anyone making that claim since before the show aired. The character visuals are obviously ripped from K-On, but I'm pretty sure at this point most people are aware that's the only similarity.

1. This is a forum, in case you're not aware. It's all about discussion and opinion. I don't expect everyone to care; I made this post on another site and I figured I'd toss it up here too just to see if it gets any interesting responses.

2. I don't know where their respective threads are.

When did they remove the "search" option from the top of the page?

Is that why people don't talk about Sora no Woto, I seem to remember it quite fondly, and any parralels I drew between it and K-ON were just being tongue and cheek, like the bellow picture.

Thinking they were too similar is pretty obvious of only looking at them both rather shallowly. I remember some of my favourite bits were of some of the character's problems (especially Noel) and the that bit with the ghost in episode 2 which were picked up by pausing.

So when did you watch the show Jackstick?

Noel was my favorite character too, I just wish the show would have done more with it's post apocalypse genre. They left that part really open ended, I'm assuming they made it like that so they could make a squeal if the show did well.

Same, this was one of the highlights for me when I watched it. I believe it was during the later episodes during her interactions with Aisha and Kanata that convinced me to finish the series involving the revelation behind the spoiler[Invisible Shiningami/Biological Weapon.]

I watched K-ON! (and K-ON!!) back in December, and Sora no Woto over these past two weeks.

My memory is probably off on a few things since I watched it during initial run, so I am sure you can see the differences better. I tend to remember people here being rather happy with Amazing Grace being used, it showed a level of symplicity that seemed to work in the familiar yet different setting.

I at least have the impression that each of the production teams involved with both of those shows have not made that assumption. Incidentally there's going to be a new show airing this summer which I'm exited about, that's called Kokoro Connect. It's based off the light novel and manga series by K-On!'s Yukiko Horiguchi (character designer and animation director). Kokoro Connect and Sora no Woto share the same character designer (Toshifumi Akai), who was also involved in parts of Sora's animation direction. So yeah, combining talents from 2 very awesome anime series for another awesome series Smile

Wait, Since when was K-On "a show about music," and not about high school girls drinking tea, eating cake, going on trips, and occasionally playing music?

LOL!!!

I never related the two series like this, but thanks to the points Jackstick makes, I will forever see Sora no Woto as "Military K-ON!"
Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy

Oh, the tears streaming from laughing. This was a great thread.

I will say this: the reason I like Sound of the Sky better than K-ON! is that I didn't get annoyed with the main characters. K-ON! just grated on my nerves, for some reason. It wasn't a bad show, but it certainly makes me wonder how in the hell this show is as popular as it is while Sora no Woto/Sound of the Sky gets very little love.

Maybe the difference is what they're wearing, and no, I'm not joking here.

Sound of the Sky (let's use the official English name here) may not be exactly a post-apocalyptic military version of K-ON!, but its cast is so heavily patterned off of K-ON!'s, and some of the activities that they do are so much in the same style, that you might as well call it that. Sure, SotS has melancholy undertones that were totally absent in K-On! and the later episodes go in an entirely different direction, but that's just part of the reflavoring.

Nah, I never assumed that it was set during WW2, and while I did think at first that it was set in a post-apocalyptic France, hints given over the course of the series indicated otherwise. I eventually came to assume that this was an alternate-world setting rather than just a future world, as the cultural elements are too thoroughly mixed.

Yeah it was pretty mixed. Trying to remember, was it an Italian town, Japanese school, German bikes, and I think their names are a little muddled too. I think there was something about their alphabet too.

I never get used to saying the shows' english name, I go through all the trouble of remembering the japanese one, and the other one just doesn't stick.
