I've been wanting to read some of Tezukas work, but there's a lot out there-- I've had my eye on Pheonix and Buddha and Adolf for a while, but I'm sure there are other good ones too (like Black Jack, i'm sure).
How do these different titles compare? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Which would you recommend? Thoughtful responses that give some details to the opinion would be really helpful. Thanks! |

If i remember correctly, dark horse also released some of Tezuka Osamu other work: Next World, Lost World, and Metropolis & Astro Boy. I have the first 3 series (no astro boy), but they're not nearly as good as the 3 you mention: Buddha, Phoenix and Adolf. I think because Lost World and Metropolis being only 1 volume and Next World being 2 volume, that they're too short to have the same effect and impact of the something like Buddha. It's been a while, I probably should reread them again.
But one thing I did notice from most of Tezuka's work is that he dealt with the importance of humanity and nature but in a less serious manner because of his cartoonish artwork. In my opinion, Buddha is probably his greatest work. It's an epic masterpierce that convery a wide range of emotion. |

The one work of Tezuka that is his greatest achievement would have to be Phoenix. Done over the course of thirty years (and never actually finished), each story in Phoenix is self contained and basically explores the meaning of life. The writing in each volume is astounding. It's one of his more serious works, and I still think his best.
Buddha and Adolf are also very good (Adolf is pretty hard to find nowadays). I would also recommend the original Astro Boy, in particular volumes 6-8 (as those are very good ones to start from). His one shots from Darkhorse are very well written, in particular Next World. And don't dismiss his art. Sure it's cartoony, but the page layouts are great, and he is able to convey emotion as good as anyone today. Very good dtuff. But for the final recommendation, Phoenix is you best bet. It's Tezuka at his best, and is very easy to jump into any volume (5 and a reprinted 2 are coming out mid-December). Volume 4 in particular is very well done. |

I was also interested in getting into Tezuka stuff as of late. Does anyone know if his Jungle Emperor manga was ever released here? I really want to read it.

Nope, never was and who knows if it ever will be. I would love to see that one released, but I'd be more excited about Dororo (his take on Samurai manga) or Princess Knight (his shojo manga and generally thought to be the original shojo manga). The problem with Princess Knight is I doubt the companys who release shojo would want to touch it because of the art style. Maybe Viz, but even then they would put it under Editors Choice to sell it.

I really, really, really want to read the Jungle Emperor Leo manga. We need to get his whole catalogue over here. Has anyone read the release of Black Jack from some time ago. Was it a respectible release of the manga, worthy of picking up?

There is no way that anyone is going to release over 400 volumes of manga, as people would simply get tired of it.
And yea, Black Jack is good. Not his best, but it's worth picking up. Fairly good translation too from what I remember. |

Well we should get all the titles with long storylines. Obviously the ones with rotating stories are too innumerous to be brought over here, but I'm interested in reading some of the mystery/horor/scifi stories of that nature. |
