‘Border Crossings: Intersections Between Japanese Popular Culture and Fandom’
The Japan Foundation is excited to invite Roland Kelts (author of Japanamerica) and Professor Susan Napier (author of Anime from Akira to Howl’s Moving Castle) to present a series of lectures discussing the driving forces behind the worldwide popularity of Japanese anime and manga in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in July 2009. In Sydney the panel discussion will be joined by Dean Prenc (Madman) and Amanda Setiadi (Animania) and in Melbourne by Dr Carolyn Stevens (University of Melbourne). The panel discussion will address such issues as fan participation; the domestication of Japanese culture in the West; and the strategic use of popular culture as ‘soft power’ in Japan’s relationships abroad, and will be followed by audience Q&A.
