I just wanted to clear something up. Are there only 4 DVD's of Fruits Basket. And if so, do they have all 26 episodes that are in the series. Any help would be great. Thanks

Go here and scroll down to the DVD releases. You'll be pleasantly suprised to know that yes, there are only 4 DVDs for all 26 episodes. I wish more companies would do this (*cough* Geneon)... |

The last 26 episode series I saw that was in 4 DVDs was the Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight DVD box set. It is truly a treat to see 4-disc series sets that still contain all the eps.

All the Slayers boxes are 4 discs and can be bought for $50 a pop. Outlaw Star is only 3 DVD cases, although there are two discs per case which at 30 bucks a pop is a great value!

yeah, I've always wondered why companies only put a couple of episodes per DVD (aside from the obvious--make more money). I'm sure 26 episodes could fit on one or two DVDs

Not necessarily. That's what bootleggers do, and because of that I've seen some really bad quality in the way of pixelation from all the compressing they did. I'm not sure how FUNimation did this or if it depends on the type of disc used, but having fewer episodes usually means more memory space for better sound quality or extras. I'm sure if these companies wanted to they would. But as you said, it's about making money, and the compromise for a whole series on one or two discs in comparison to what it would probably cost to squeeze it all together and still make it look good could possibly lead to an unfair or unlikeable trade-off between themselves and the customers .
In other words, if they did that, they'd probably jack up the price to box set level and some of us would just rather buy a little at a time |

I think that four episodes per disc is perfect, but 3 or even 2(like Gantz) per disc is ridiculous.
What Tony said about compressing too many episodes onto one DVD is so very true. It makes a noticeable difference in the picture and audio quality and does not leave very much room for any special features, not that anyone watches them, but still... |

It's not "make more money" it's make a profit. And no, 26 eps could not fit on one or two DVDs without greatly reducing quality. |

Techinally, "making money" is just as good a figure of speech. Making a profit can also be called a positive gain in revenues, and revenues of course usually come from cash, or money if you will . Sure it's written as assets and is represented in numbers on the balance sheets, but when it all comes down to it, making "money" (and possibly converting some of it to cash or something for whatever purpose) is what all businesses are ultimately trying to do.
At least, I think that's what I think I'm learning in Accounting |

Indeed Tony, but the term used was "make more money". If they squeezed 26 eps on one or two DVDs they would make no money, just lose it. |

Right, which is what I was trying to point out. I suppose technology could be advanced enough to fit an entire anime series on one disc (or whatever we move on to) someday, but for now it'd be way to expensive given the current level the world is at. Personally, I wouldn't mind a Holodeck kind of thing so I could actually live in an anime world. Ah~ Star Trek. Of course for civilization to advance that far we'd have to have a World War III, have a bunch of people die, and stop The Borg from thwarting Zephram Cochran's attempt at making First Contact with the Vulcans using his former nuclear missle of a warp ship Probably my favorite movie by the way .
