I think that's what makes Hiro Mashima so great (In my opinion). He can take the whole magic world, tragic past thing and make it so... Interesting and fun!
Though not as original as "Rave Master" I freaking Fairy Tail. It's cartoon-y, but can keep a serious moment and out right weird in a good way. (Let's not forget the oh so often references to Rave Master xD). Erza's story was good and was a real tear jerker. And I just love how Jellal didn't Heel Face Turn.
I guess I'll just have to order this ASAP since I don't own any of the volumes.[/spoiler]

I agree that the arc in this volume has a lot of shonen cliches, but its after this arc that the story really starts to get interesting.
The Fighting Festival arc is next, and is probably the best arc in any shonen I've read in awhile. And it definitely does away with a lot of the cliches you would find.
