Apparently, a video interview with a WB PR person at
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6989380/ mentions that the new look of classic Looney Tunes characters was done in response to kids who use the internet and dig anime. Pretty ironic, considering that some guy at BAAF who interviewed Miyazaki told me he's a fan of the Chuck Jones Bugs Bunny. |

I heard about this a couple months ago, and it's caused an uproar in the classic American cartoon communities. Honestly, I am disgusted with this, but what can you do in the name of merchandise? I recall one quote:
Retain the classic wit and wisdom? Err.... As much as I love anime, I hate to see something like this happen to American animation because of it. |

I watched the news report on this online. I don't like it, and I don't think WB knows exactly what most people want, they are only assuming what kids like.

guh!! They look awful! I personally love the "classic" bugs bunny, I don't see why they have to give them a face lift that is reminiscent of anime.

They look really scary to me. Are they trying to scare the kids?

It sounds like they are trying to fit a classic cartoon franchise into to the mold of whatever they think is hip and edgy right now. It won't work I'm afraid. This is what happens when marketing people run around unchecked, they dream up things like this.

Heh. Look around teh IntarNet for a flash animation called "A New Bunny." (it's not work/school safe)

Eh, I don't get why people are so offended, it's not as if WB has never done this before with Loony Toons. First came Tiny Toons Adventures (which was done the same way as Loonatics is as far as characters go; all new characters, NOT updates of the originals) and Baby Loony Toons (which actually did screw around with the characters, give me Muppet Babies any day). So they're going for a trifecta, I don't see how the people at the helm of WB can screw it up any more than they already have with their horrible live action attempts.

But it doesn't mean we shouldn't be pissed off that they're not only doing it again, but essentially blaming us—the anime fan community—for it this time around. |

You know the truly funny thing? I bet a good number of people here who hate the new Loonatics show (without seeing an ep) are in favor of the new PowerPuff Girls "anime". You know, the one that won't involve PPG creator Craig McCracken.

Yeah well, McCracken hasn't done crap since then. But at least he's not gonna try to rip off his own work like Matt Groening did with Futurama.

The huge difference with Tiny Toons and Baby Looney Tunes is that you can easily identify them and fit with the natural canon of the Looney Tunes Universe. They seam without any interuption. With the Loonatics, it's such a major digression from the original, of course people are gonna balk. |

Tiny Toons, yes, Baby Looney Tunes, no. BLT is waaay out there. suddenly everyone is a baby, including "older" characters like Elmer Fudd, while Granny is still an old lady. Then you've got the characters doing things that are "out of character" so to speak, like the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote or Sylvester and Tweetie playing together rather than trying to eat each other. Unlike Loonatics, this show doesn't feature proteges or super hero decendents, but the actual characters in a way that couldn't possibly be canon.
I actually don't have a problem with this show so sure, I'll take the blame for it. If this show was about a green Bugs Bunny rather than a green Buzz Bunny I'd be pissed too, but I don't see where all this angst and anger is coming from over a show that really doesn't effect the original series much more than just featuring vaguely familiar characters. And the Power Puff Girls fit seamlessly? Using Tezuka-style Astro Boy animation and giving them doesn't seem to click, but I digress. To the people who hate Loonatics, watch a frickin' episode first. |
