If there's a way to backup to home drive, yes, it would definitely be a viable alternative, I'd welcome it myself.
Without possibility to backup, then no. Flash memory still has issues concerning further development because of the inherent limitations like scalability, memory wear, speed. I've had personally several thumb drives fail over time... Even if price comes down, with no way to secure a backup, long term promise of it entering the Collectors arena is precisely nil.
There are successor technologies in development, like race-track, phase-memory and several others, intent on addressing those issues.
Discs themselves are a bit(or more) obsolete at this point, so I really can't wait for that day to come soon enough though.
